Is Hypixel on Bedrock in 2024?

As a long-time Hypixel player and self-proclaimed Minecraft addict, this question comes up a lot – especially from friends who play Pocket Edition or on consoles. So let me provide a clear answer upfront:

No, Hypixel is not available on Bedrock platforms in 2024.

With over 200,000 concurrent players at peaks, Hypixel firmly remains a Java exclusive server. Read on as I analyze why Hypixel stays Java-only, evaluate the best Bedrock alternatives, and investigate cross-platform play options.

Hypixel‘s Java Edition Dominance

As the largest Minecraft server globally, Hypixel has some staggering statistics:

  • Over 1 million daily active players
  • Over 86 million player logins to date
  • Over 7 billion hours played life-to-date
  • Four Guinness World Records achieved

With these unmatched figures, Hypixel undoubtedly dominates the Java server space. Converting all this content to also work properly on Bedrock would mean essentially rebuilding the entire server from scratch.

Java vs. Bedrock Gameplay and Mechanics

The core game may be called Minecraft either way, but dramatic differences under the hood make cross-platform gameplay quite challenging:

Java EditionBedrock Edition
  • Supports mods/plugins
  • Redstone has more complex mechanics
  • Written in Java programming language
  • Can only play on PC/Mac
  • No server mod support
  • Simplified redstone
  • Written in C++
  • Play across consoles & mobile

As you can see above, things we Java players take for granted like mods and complex redstone wouldn‘t fully function the same on Bedrock.

Why Did Hypixel Drop Bedrock Support?

Hypixel actually experimented with Bedrock support back in 2017. However, the small Bedrock player base combined with major development hurdles resulted in them shutting it down. Per the Hypixel blog:

"Unfortunately, due to low and continually decreasing numbers, it‘s no longer viable for us to continue maintaining our Bedrock support. As a result, we have decided to cease support for Bedrock."

Speaking from experience, even solo developers struggle building cross-platform games. So I can‘t imagine tackling it for a mammoth, hyper-complex server like Hypixel supporting 100,000+ concurrent Java players.

The bottom line is that the return on investment wasn‘t worthwhile. And frankly, as a business decision, I think Hypixel made the right call by focusing on enhancing Java.

The Best Hypixel Alternative: NetherGames

For now, Bedrock players looking for a Hypixel substitute should check out NetherGames. In terms of gameplay and mechanics, here‘s how the two servers compare:

HypixelNetherGames
  • All major minigames
  • In-depth SkyBlock mode
  • One main hub server
  • Similar minigames
  • No SkyBlock
  • Multiple hub options

As shown above, NetherGames essentially acts like a Hypixel-lite. You get access to gameplay like Bed Wars, Sky Wars, and Murder Mystery, but not flagship modes like SkyBlock. I‘d estimate it currently captures about 40% of the true Hypixel experience.

The NetherGames community continues growing though. So hopefully with time they can enhance closer to feature parity with all that Hypixel offers us Java diehards.

The Prospects of Cross-Platform Play

While full compatibility between editions remains complex, Minecraft makers Mojang have acknowledged interest in enabling cross-platform play. In fact, their partnerships with third-party services shows clear intention (more below!)

For direct gameplay between Java and Bedrock, users‘ best bet is currently the GeyserMC plugin. This fan-made solution lets you add Bedrock support to existing Java servers. It essentially translates network traffic between editions.

So while not perfect, the the community-driven GeyserMC does officially have Mojang‘s blessing. So we know developers want to get us playing together one day!

My Take: Expect Cross-Platform Down the Road

Cross-platform play sits firmly in Mojang‘s sights, but they still have issues to tackle around differences in gameplay mechanics and mods.

I predict we could see Hypixel integrate solutions like GeyserMC themselves within a couple years. But a full port? My money says they stay Java-exclusive until 2025 at the absolute earliest.

So in summary – enjoy Hypixel-style play with NetherGames for now, Bedrock friends. But never say never on being able to party up with your Java pals someday!

Let me know if you have any other questions around this topic! Happy mining either way 🙂
