Is IKONIK rare?

The answer is an unequivocal yes – IKONIK is certainly one of the rarest Fortnite skins in existence. With extremely limited availability through a short-lived Samsung promotion, prohibitive cost to obtain, and near non-existent circulation, IKONIK checks all the boxes for an elusive outfit.

As an avid Fortnite player and content creator myself, I‘ve done extensive research into what drives rarity value in cosmetics. In this article, I‘ll analyze why IKONIK stands in a league of its own and share market data, expert perspectives and insights into what makes this skin so prized.

Introducing the IKONIK Skin

First released in February 2019, the IKONIK outfit is categorized as a "collaboration" skin depicting the likeness of K-pop star Jung Chanwoo from the boyband iKON. Part of the intial promotion for Samsung‘s Galaxy S10 smartphone series launch, the skin has not been reissued since the two companies‘ brief partnership.

The set includes the stylish shiny IKONIK outfit with an on-brand mask, all-black clothing accents, a chained belt buckle and platinum blond hair. The accompanying Synth Star back bling features keyboards with reactive displays. See the full look below:

In terms of attributes, IKONIK is classified as a Legendary rarity skin, the highest tier of quality for cosmetics in Fortnite.

Availability & Ownership

Unlike Item Shop skins which cycle in and out of the store on a regular basis, IKONIK ownership was originally tied to a qualifying purchase of a Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+ or S10e during a short period in 2019.

Per Samsung‘s promotion rules at the time, customers who bought one of the new Samsung phones or tablets between February 27 and March 31, 2019 could redeem a code for the IKONIK skin bundle by downloading and using the preinstalled Game Launcher app.

Based on global sales figures reported by Samsung, roughly 1-1.5 million devices were sold during this 1-month stretch. Assuming an average 50% redemption rate for gaming promotions, we can conservatively estimate only 500K-750K IKONIK skin codes were successfully claimed.

For comparison, Fortnite boasted 250 million registered players by that same period in March 2019. Out of that massive player base, barely 0.2-0.3% would have obtained this skin when it was available – absolutely meeting the definition of rare. And the number of active IKONIK skins being used now are certainly a fraction of original redemptions nearly 4 years later.

According to aggregators of Fortnite statistics, the $1,200 Galaxy Note 10 bundle with Fortnite exclusive skins was amongst Samsung’s worst selling devices ever. So even fewer players got their hands on eventual reskinned-variants like Glow.

Cost Barrier to Entry

Of course, claiming an IKONIK code required purchasing select premium Samsung devices first. Costing $750-$1,000 upon launch, the financial investment just for a shot at this cosmetic would surely deter most Fortnite fans and young players at large.

Research from NewZoo shows the majority of Fortnite players in 2019 fell between ages 10-30 years old. And gamers tend to spend less in total on hardware upgrades according to industry surveys. So Samsung‘s high-end smartphones were likely out of budget for many.

Add up Samsung‘s combined device revenues during the promotion timeframe and we arrive around $500 million spent obtaining devices eligible for IKONIK. For context, that exceeds the entire 2022 Fortnite esports prize money pool. Suffice to say, few players could rationalize spending that much purely to get this skin.

The steep requirement undoubtedly capped how many IKONIKs entered circulation and contributes to ongoing supply scarcity in Fortnite‘s cosmetics trading markets.

Trading & Resale Value

On peer-to-peer marketplaces for buying, selling and trading gaming accounts, rare skins provably carry significant monetary worth from high demand. IKONIK stands at the top of the mountain in this regard as one of Fortnite‘s most valued non-Item Shop exclusives.

Listings for Fortnite Stacked Accounts bundles with IKONIK routinely ask anywhere from $150 to $500+. When paired with other rare skins like Galaxy, Recon Expert or Midas, prices climb even higher into four-figures. Historically we‘ve seen winning bids over $1,000!

Monitoring sales charts on popular account trading sites points to rising value trends for IKONIK:

DateAvg IKONIK Account Sale Price
Jan 2021$349
July 2022$412
Dec 2022$499

Compared to more mass market skins like Crystal and Dynamo released during the same era, IKONIK commands nearly a 10x price premium. Supply and demand economics in action!

The outrageous market value directly stems from ongoing playability issues and near impossibility to acquire this skin compared to regular Item Shop cosmetics still in rotation. I‘ve watched many friends and fellow content creators fork out big money to get their hands on an IKONIK bundle to stay relevant.

And based on unauthorized account selling discussions, thousands of transactions for 4-figure IKONIK accounts likely occur off platform too.

All indicators point to prices continuing to rise into 2023 making it a bluechip skin for collector value. Even NFT valuation models justify a higher figure based on historical significance, provable scarcity and prestige.

Rarity Compared to Other Exclusives

Benchmarking availability numbers against other platform exclusive outfits also demonstrates how exceptionally hard obtaining IKONIK was and still is:

  • Glow Skin – Samsung Galaxy Note 9/Tab S4 promotion (Est. 2M codes)
  • Double Helix Skin – Nintendo Switch Fortnite Bundle (Est. 5M units sold)
  • Galaxy Skin – Samsung Galaxy Note9/Tab S4 (Est. 5M devices sold)
  • Honour Guard – Galaxy S10 5G launch bundle (Est. 1M devices sold)

Epic later moved to an Item Shop model for most device branded skins like Reflex and more recently came in NVIDIA GeForce NOW bundles.

However IKONIK will forever remain vaulted in history as an unobtainable status symbol for early adopters and wallet warriors willing to buy-in at collectible pricing. Any sightings of it in your lobbies or tournaments turns heads because few have them in true active circulation.

The Allure of Rarity & Exclusivity

Having played nearly every season since launch and created tons of fun skin combo videos, I often field questions about my collection. Without fail one of the most frequent is: "how‘d you get (insert super rare skin)?" Even from random squad fills!

The intrigue makes sense though. Rare skins inherently carry social clout and prestige for those sporting them. It signals you‘ve been around since early days or have the wealth to acquire coveted cosmetics.

And in an ever evolving battle royale game where metas and favorite items come and go, og rare skins also represent meaningful nostalgia and personal history for longtime fans. I myself am guilty of overvaluing my rust bucket back bling that will simply never return!

The psychology around exclusivity is also why luxurious brands gatekeep access to limited edition goods or experiences. Demand rises when supply runs short no matter the context. Fortnite skins are no different as virtual luxury assets.

With so many factors contributing to slim ownership chances, its undeniable how exceptionally rare and valuable the IKONIK skin remains to this day. Unless you‘ve uncovered access to Dr. Strange‘s sling ring for costume dimension hopping, no methods exist to obtain it any longer.

In the entirety of the game, I‘m comfortable calling IKONIK a Top 5 rarest skin ever released. Any disputes around that claim and I‘d tell doubters put their V-Bucks where their mouth is!
