Is Meloetta Rare in Pokémon Go?
Yes, Meloetta is considered an extremely rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go. As a Mythical Pokémon, Meloetta has only been available for limited periods since the game launched in 2016. Let‘s dive into why this unique creature is so difficult to obtain for players.
Why Is Meloetta So Rare?
As a Mythical Pokémon, Meloetta already has rarity baked into its status. Mythical Pokémon are event-exclusive in Pokémon Go, meaning they can only be obtained under special circumstances. Unlike Legendary Pokémon, they do not appear in Raids or as Field Research rewards.
Based on historical availability data, here is a comparison of Meloetta‘s rarity versus other Mythical Pokémon:

As you can see, Meloetta has been available by far the least number of times compared to other Mythicals. It first appeared during the overall 6 year lifespan of Pokémon Go just last year.
The limited one-time access to catch Meloetta has contributed to its extreme rarity.
How Difficult Is It To Catch Meloetta?
During its debut in the "Melody Pokémon" Special Research story from September to October 2021, catching Meloetta was no easy task.
The exclusive Timed Research required trainers to complete up to 11 pages of challenges. These included:
- Catching Pokémon of specific types
- Powering up creatures to high CP levels
- Evolving certain Pokémon
- Walking long distances
- Battling other trainers
- And much more!
After all that effort, trainers then unlocked the potential to encounter and catch Meloetta, with no guarantee of success.
Based on community reports, the catch rate for Meloetta felt lower than typical Legendary Pokémon. Some unlucky trainers failed to add this rare Pokémon to their roster even after dozens of tries with Ultra Balls and Golden Razz Berries.
So again, extremely difficult availability combined with a complex catch process fuels Meloetta‘s rarity in Pokémon Go.
What Does the Future Hold for Meloetta?
As a passionate Pokémon Go enthusiast, I strongly believe Mythical Pokémon like Meloetta should become more accessible for fans. Sure, some degree of exclusivity rewards longtime players.
However, locking one-of-a-kind creatures behind limited Timed Research windows feels restrictive:
- New or returning players miss out completely
- Rural, disabled, or less hardcore hunters struggle to participate
- It incentivizes sharing accounts and breaks ToS
I would love to see Meloetta come back for future events — perhaps easier Special Research that grants everyone at least one guaranteed catch. Or once worldwide availability improves, what about releasing Meloetta as a 1-Star Raid Boss?
