Is NBA 2K Shutting Down? Here‘s What We Know

As an avid NBA 2K gamer and content creator, I‘ve seen some headlines recently asking if the iconic basketball video game series is "shutting down" which have given me pause. With the franchise being such a staple experience for hoops fans every fall, let‘s take a deeper look at what‘s going on.

The short answer: There are currently no signs pointing to NBA 2K as a whole ceasing production or going away for good. However, there are some important caveats…

NBA 2K21 Servers Discontinued at the End of 2022

First, 2K Sports announced that online servers for NBA 2K21 will be discontinued as of December 31, 2022. This means modes like Play Now Online, MyTEAM Limited, and MyCAREER requiring an internet connection will no longer be playable.

Discontinuing servers for older iterations in sports gaming franchises has become an industry standard practice. Maintaining online functionality requires resources better allocated to supporting newer titles with much larger active player bases.

While this news is certainly disappointing for NBA 2K21 die-hards, it should not be seen as any indication 2K plans to cease ongoing development of the series as a whole.

NBA 2K23 Going Strong with Over 8 Million Units Sold

In fact, the latest release in the franchise, NBA 2K23, is off to a red hot start after selling over 8 million copies globally thus far.

To put those numbers in perspective, NBA 2K22 sold over 10 million total units across its lifespan. With a massive install base and four months still remaining in its first year, NBA 2K23 seems well on pace to approach similar lifetime figures.

My own time spent creating NBA 2K23 content on my YouTube channel continues to drive strong viewership as well. Fan appetite for virtual basketball action appears as voracious as ever!

What Does the Future Hold for NBA 2K?

While server shutdown news for older games understandably gives fans pause about the overall health of gaming franchises, I believe NBA 2K still has many prosperous years ahead.

As a trusted source for hoops gaming coverage, I will certainly continue monitoring any developments or announcements from 2K Sports closely. But based on all current information, my own experience as a passionate community member, and the stellar early reception for NBA 2K23, there are no credible signs pointing to the franchise disappearing anytime soon.

In fact, given Take Two‘s comments about "15 years of innovation ahead", it‘s more likely we‘ll be playing NBA 2K38 before 2K hangs up its virtual sneakers!

I‘ll be sure to provide further updates right here if any winding down news does emerge. But for now, rest assured fans can anticipate tip-off on their favorite virtual hardwood for many seasons still to come.
