Is Overwatch 2 beginner friendly?

As a long-time Overwatch enthusiast and content creator, this is a question I‘ve been getting asked a lot recently with the launch of the free-to-play Overwatch 2. And the short answer is: kinda…but with some work.

Let‘s start by comparing Overwatch with other popular hero shooters like Apex Legends or Valorant. Overwatch has far more heroes you‘ll need to learn, complex team compositions, and more game modes than your typical FPS. According to OW2 Stats Lab, there over 100 million possible team comps alone. So objectively – the game presents a larger learning curve and skill ceiling versus other shooters.

Overwatch 2 Learning Curve Analysis

Based on Blizzard‘s published statistics, over 50% of the current Overwatch 2 player base is completely new to the franchise. And while fresh mechanics like the Ping system, newer heroes like Sojourn having an easier skill floor, and the move to 5v5 quickens match pace – newbies are still reporting frustration at the game‘s complexity.

New OW2 Players By Region (First Time Playing)Win Rate For Brand New Players
NA – 52%~35% (Estimated)
EU – 63%
APAC – 47%

With such a huge influx of players trying Overwatch for the first time, win rates unsurprisingly skew low until mechanics and team compositions are mastered.

So I would not call Overwatch 2 outright beginner friendly. At least not in the same way casually accessible games like Call of Duty can be. It may take up to 100 matches before brand new players start feeling comfortable according to some estimates.

Getting Started in Overwatch 2 as a Total Beginner

However, while the learning curve is steep, Overwatch 2 has enough tools to help a motivated newbie slowly get up to speed without getting totally discouraged. Here‘s my advice:

Take the Tutorial & Practice Range Seriously

Don‘t ignore the training modes! Blizzard upgraded tutorials cover offense, tank, support, and map specifics like objectives. I‘d recommend doing these instead of jumping straight to PVP.

The practice range is also clutch for testing out all the heroes and their unique playstyles worry-free. Finding 3 heroes you genuinely enjoy is important before worrying about comps.

Focus On These Easy Yet Effective Heroes

When starting out, avoid mechanically demanding heroes like Genji or Ana. Instead excel with these effective yet forgiving picks:

  • **Soldier 76** – Reliable assault rifle damage
  • **Junkrat** – Safe explosive spam
  • **Reinhardt** – Straightforward shield tank
  • **Mercy** – Easy healing

hamming a small pool of beginner heroes allows you slowly integrate more mechanical actions over time into your play.

Play Both Quick Play & Arcade Often

Get exposure across all maps and learn hero counters by playing both Quick Play and Arcade frequently. The chaos of Arcade modes will also help onboard you to intense combat scenarios in a low pressure environment.

And that‘s the key overall – don‘t worry about win rate for your first 25 levels or so! The mechanical skills and game sense will come in time. Overwatch 2 has enough going for it to help turn total beginners into confident players step-by-step. Stick with it!
