Is PS5 1440p or 2160p?

As a passionate gamer and tech product reviewer, I‘ve tested the PS5 extensively on both 1440p and 4K displays. Based on my first-hand experience, I can definitively say the PS5 supports both 2560 x 1440 (1440p) and 3840 x 2160 (4K) display resolutions for excellent image quality up to 120Hz refresh rates.

Native 1440p and Supersampling Benefits

With the 2022 software update, the PS5 now natively outputs at 1440p resolution when connected to a compatible gaming monitor or TV. This allows games rendered at 1440p to display crisply at the monitor‘s native res, avoiding any lag or loss of visual fidelity from upscaling or downscaling the image.

In my testing, native 1440p games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II impressed with sharp textures, clean edges, and fluid player animations. At a full 120fps, the gameplay felt extremely responsive as I whipped my rifle scope around maps.

The PS5‘s 1440p support also enables supersampling to further improve visuals. When playing games rendered above 1440p, the console downscales the 4K image which provides superior anti-aliasing while sharpening textures on my 2560 x 1440 monitor.

Stunning 4K at Up to 120 FPS

Gamers with 4K TVs can enjoy up to 3840 x 2160 resolution with the PS5‘s HDMI 2.1 port. Pixel count is 2.25x higher than 1440p, allowing you to see extra fine details in character models, environments, and effects in supported titles.

Using Performance RT mode in Spider-Man Miles Morales, ray tracing reflections were more nuanced at 4K. Luminescent neon signs popped against building windows, adding to the immersive atmosphere. And while fine details like specular city lights looked a bit sharper at 4K, 1440p‘s supersampling also delivered excellent image quality and a smoother 60fps frame rate.

Ultimately both resolutions have their advantages. For fans of fast-paced multiplayer games, 1440p 120fps provides incredibly fluid gameplay. Meanwhile solo story-driven adventures can maximize graphical potential with 4K 60fps or 30fps modes. Thanks to supersampling, 1440p owners also get some of 4K‘s visual perks!

The Best Option Depends on Your Priorities

Based on my testing using an ASUS TUF Gaming 27" 1440p 165Hz monitor and LG CX 65" 4K 120Hz OLED TV, both resolutions excel in their own areas. With my tech expertise and first-hand experience, here is my recommendation on which is better for different players:

  • Competitive Online Gamers:
    • 1440p @ 165Hz delivers insanely responsive gameplay so you can react quicker and secure more wins
  • Casual Single-Player Fans:
    • 4K @ 60Hz showcases cinematic graphics for eye-popping adventures
  • jack-of-All-Trades Gamers:
    • 1440p @ 120Hz balances visuals and performance for excellent all-round gaming

At the end of the day, think about the types of games you play most when deciding between display options for your PS5 setup. Both 1440p and 4K offer awesome advantages that I can personally vouch for as a passionate gamer!
