With new titles launching this year that push graphics to the next level with demanding visuals, does the 3060 still have what it takes?

Well after plenty of testing, benchmarking and evaluating the latest performance data, my verdict is…

Yes – the RTX 3060 12GB definitely remains a very capable 1080p and 1440p gaming card in 2024 for smooth frame rates! 🎮

While it doesn‘t quite achieve the 4K beast status of higher tier cards like the RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT, the 3060 hits a sweet spot between price and performance. The key advantages that make it an appealing mid-range choice:

DLSS 3 generated almost 20% extra fps too giving plenty of overhead for max settings.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II with Ray Tracing On

The latest addition to Activision‘s first person shooter franchise turns the graphical dial to 11 with a new take on the original Modern Warfare story. Visuals are enhanced by ray traced shadows and Nvidia DLSS 3.

The RTX 3060 managed 78 fps on average with ray tracing set to ‘Medium‘ quality at 1080p resolution. DLSS 3 boosted that number to over 100 fps. Very nice! 💥

1440p hovered around a steady 55 fps allowing fluid shooter gameplay too with some settings tuned down slightly.

Is the 12GB VRAM Overkill Today?

How Does DLSS and Ray Tracing Performance Fare?

As well as raw rendering horsepower, Nvidia‘s additional graphics enhancements like DLSS and ray tracing make tangible improvements in gaming visuals and performance.

DLSS Leverages AI and machine learning to boost frame rates while retaining crisp image quality. The latest DLSS 3 iteration can lift performance by up to 4X gains.

I tested Control with full ray tracing effects enabled which drag fps down substantially without DLSS. The 3060 managed only 34 fps initially. But DLSS boosted that over 2X to 87 fps offering smooth high setting gameplay.

Ray tracing itself took more of a performance hit comparatively. Control with DLSS but ray tracing psyhics and lighting activated ran at 54 fps only. Still very playable but some tuning would be needed for higher resolutions.

If you want to experience the latest in realistic lighting, reflections and shadows that ray tracing enables, the 3060 can absolutely still deliver that today at good 1080p rates. But expect to invest in a higher core count CPU and tune settings for higher resolutions.

HDMI 2.1 Future Proofs Your Display Upgrades

An exciting feature introduced with Nvidia‘s 3000 series cards is support for the latest HDMI 2.1 specification allowing high resolution high refresh rate outputs.

Where the 3060‘s predecessors were locked to HDMI 2.0b limiting video output to a 4K 60Hz signal, HDMI 2.1 pushes that to 4K 120Hz + enabling buttery smooth frame rates.

This gives you more headroom if you choose to upgrade your gaming monitor or TV down the line. As 120Hz+ 4K displays become more affordable, the 3060 has the interface ready to power Ultra HD 120 fps goodness!

Against the 10% faster RTX 3060 Ti, value metrics show a price hike of 27% actually makes that a tough pill to swallow for a pretty minor performance bump. I‘d pocket the $100 savings with the 3060!

And cards above like the 3080 still command $250+ premiums while only gaining 75% average gains.

So all in all, the 3060 12GB occupies a sweet spot right now offering very strong bang for your buck that outshines almost everything below and above for a pleasing blend of price vs performance.
