As a passionate VR gaming fan, I‘ll often get asked if that amazing $299 wireless VR headset from Meta (formerly Oculus) has dropped to an unbelievable $200 price point. And who wouldn‘t love a fully standalone virtual reality device with great controllers and solid performance for the cost of a game console controller?

Unfortunately though, the reality is that the entry-level 128GB Quest 2 model currently sells for $399, double that dream $200 price. And the 256GB version now costs $499 with Meta having raised prices across the board in mid-2022. Ouch!

But all is not lost for bargain hunting VR gamers like us. While we await future Quest models to one day deliver a $200 wireless VR dream machine, there are still deals to be found…

Understanding the Quest 2 Value Proposition

As this table shows, the Quest 2 holds up very well against pricier competitors. It‘s not as technically advanced as something like the Valve Index, but for a mainstream consumer product under $500, the visuals and performance are highly compelling.

And that‘s before considering it doesn‘t need an expensive gaming PC like most headsets. The processing and battery are integrated right inside the headset itself. Pretty magical!

So in terms of what you get for the money, the Quest 2 is a winner in my book even at $399. And as a mobile gamer used to buying $1000 phones every few years, I personally have no issue paying up for this level of innovation and fun.

Pricing Evolution – From $299 to $399 to $499

The Quest 2 initially launched in October 2020 with a killer starting point of just $299. At that time, you got 64GB of storage which was ample for core titles like Beat Saber. Sure the materials felt a bit cheap, but amazing VR visuals for 300 bucks? Sign me up!

However in August 2021, Meta discontinued the entry-level 64GB SKU and made the 128GB version the new baseline model at $299. This doubled the included storage for the same price which was fantastic.

The magic only lasted about a year though before inflation hit the fan. Meta revealed in July 2022 that both the 128GB and 256GB models would be going up $100 in price due to – and I quote – "rising manufacturing and shipping costs".

  • 256GB – from $399 to $499

An overnight 40% jump for the base model stung, but Meta can‘t fully be blamed as many gadget makers from Sony to Samsung have raised device pricing in 2022. Thank covid and chip shortages for those financial gut punches.

Still, Meta could have absorbed more margin pain before passing on the full $100 manufacturing cost increase to loyal VR fans. But such is capitalism!

When Will We See a $200 Wireless VR Headset?

So with the current economic landscape, what are the chances we get a wireless PC-free VR solution down to that magical $200 mark any time soon?

Unfortunately, the core technology components like displays and processors aren‘t projected to drop in cost quickly enough to enable a Quest-like device with good specifications to retail under $250 in the next 2 years.

However, as manufacturing scales up and Meta sells more units, at some point in the 2024-2025 timeframe we could finally achieve the dream. But expect compromises like lower resolution screens or small sets of onboard games.

As a gamer, here‘s hoping meta sells tens of millions of Quest 2s over the coming years. That level of success will definitely accelerate cost reductions for future models!
