Should I Join the Brotherhood of Steel or Not?

As a passionate Fallout gamer, I‘ve asked myself this question across many playthroughs of Fallout 4. After much reflection and analysis, I believe there are good arguments both for and against joining the iconic Brotherhood of Steel faction. Let‘s break them down.

Overview of the Brotherhood of Steel

For those less into the lore, the Brotherhood of Steel are descended from U.S. soldiers with three main goals:

  1. Acquire lost pre-war technology.
  2. Safeguard technology from misuse.
  3. Exterminate mutated threats to humanity.

While once noble, their rigid goals have increasingly shifted them towards technology-obsessed fascism over the years.

Key Reasons to Join

Cutting-Edge Weapons and Armor

As a member, you gain access to the coolest toys in the Wasteland like laser/plasma weapons and the imposing T-60 Power Armor. This gear makes you nearly invincible.

Epic, Large-Scale Battles

You‘ll fight alongside the Brotherhood in huge, visually spectacular battles against threatening groups like the Institute and their synth armies. It‘s incredibly cinematic.

Clear Structure and Purpose

The rigid ideology of the Brotherhood provides clear direction compared to other chaotic factions. If you crave order and purpose, they offer a singular path.

Ally With Danse

Having Danse as a mentor and ally in the Brotherhood makes for a far richer companion story experience compared to just maxing his affinity.

Reasons Not to Join

Their Bigotry and Fascism

The Brotherhood has shifted into something resembling technology-obsessed fascists, harboring deep hatred for ghouls, synths and mutants, believing them worthy only of extermination.

Making Enemies

Joining turns them hostile against groups like the Railroad and Institute. You must perpetrate violence against factions or characters that you may like.

Lose Companions

Some existing companions like Deacon who disagree with the Brotherhood‘s views will abandon you if you join, negatively impacting your experience.

Hypocritical Ideology

Despite a mission to safeguard tech, they hoard advanced weapons and power armor to themselves rather than help people. This hypocrisy is a turn-off for many.

Destroying the Institute

Eliminating the Institute means losing access to beloved companions, quests and gear tied to the faction. This can leave players regretful.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are compelling reasons to join both for the high-powered gear and defined purpose, but also objections around their fascist ideology. It comes down to RPG priorities and desired story experience. I recommend playing both paths!
