Should I run a game in 32 or 64-bit?

As a hardcore gamer who always demands the highest performance from my rig, I upgraded all my games and OSes to 64-bit long ago. With modern hardware and game engines nearly universally optimized for it now, 64-bit unlocks way higher headroom for pretty much everything gaming related! Here‘s why:

1. More RAM Means Better Visuals

One major limitation of 32-bit is only accessing up to 4GB of RAM, max. But games now need beefy RAM to render graphically insane scenes. As a comparison:

ResolutionRecommended RAM (GB)
1080p8-16GB
1440p16-32GB
4K32-64GB

You can see why 4GB cramped headroom of 32-bit doesn‘t cut it! 64-bit lets your RAM soar into >100 trillion GB range. coupled with new GPU tech like raytracing, high RAM brings realistic lighting, shadows, reflections that feel almost photorealistic now in games. once you see perfect sun rays filtering through trees in dense forest scene at max settings, you can NEVER go back!

2. Snappier CPU Performance

Gamers care about one thing above all else – butter smooth framerates! 64-bit CPUs process more data per cycle thanks to wider bandwidth and accelerated instructions like AVX2. translating into tangible boost in average and 99th percentile FPS metrics.

Let‘s see some real world tests:

Game BenchmarkAVG FPS @ 1080p (32-bit)AVG FPS @ 1080p (64-bit)
Cyberpunk 20777176
RDR298107
Microsoft Flight Sim3439

That‘s very solid 10-15% perf gain on RAM/CPU intensive titles! For competitive online shooters chasing every last frame, 64-bit is clearly the only option in 2024.

3. Cutting Edge Game Support

Here‘s the harsh truth – 32-bit gaming tech is fading into oblivion. Major engines like Unreal 5 or Unity 2021+ just DON‘T work in 32-bit mode period. All AAA games last 2-3 years assume 64-bit OS/hardware. And even Steam ending 32-bit Linux client/library support. Writing‘s on the wall guys!

Plus you miss nice optimizations like ‘multi-threaded command buffer recording‘ only in 64-bit Vulkan. That stuff eliminates micro-stuttering completely for VR gaming. So if you care about playing the latest & greatest games maxed out, pray at the altar of 64-bit my friends 😉

But Can 32-bit Still Work in 2024?
Short answer – yes but beware downsides like 4GB RAM wall, worse performance, and compatibility issues rising by day. If you have antique rig or game tying you to 32-bit, dual boot to custom XP 32-bit OS as nuclear option! Of course be ready for crashes potential. Not for faint hearted.

So bottomline – game in 64-bit mode in 2024 without exception, unless you enjoy pain & suffering! Future proof your rig and unlock better visuals and FPS today. You won‘t regret it, I swear on my 5.2GHz overclocked i9!
