What does 2 stars on a Pokémon card mean?

If you look closely at the bottom right of any Pokémon card, you‘ll notice a small black symbol. This icon indicates the rarity level, with more stars signifying a rarer and more sought-after card. Specifically, 2 stars means your card is rare and features special holofoil finishing.

History of Pokémon Card Rarity Symbols

Pokémon first introduced rarity symbols on their cards in 1999. Back then it was simple – circles for common cards, diamonds for uncommons, and 1 star for rare cards.

Over the years as more premium cards emerged, they started adding more stars. Thus 2 star and 3 star icons were born to denote ultra rare and secret rare tiers.

Fast forward to 2023, and while they‘ve tweaked card layouts, those defining black symbols still help collectors identify prized pickings.

Rarity Symbol Distribution in Sets

On average across modern Pokémon TCG sets:

Common (Circle)70%
Uncommon (Diamond)20%
Rare (1 Star)7%
Rare Holo (2 Star)2%
Ultra Rare (3 Star+)1%

As you can see, 2 star rare holofoil cards are harder to pull than regular rares. But why does rarity increase value so much?

What Makes Pokémon Cards Rare & Valuable

As an expert collector, I assess card value based on two core factors:

1. Scarcity & Demand

Simply put, rare cards are hard to find! Lower print runs combined with collector desire puts upward pressure on prices.

Nostalgic cards from the 90s and early 00s especially fall into this category. As an expert, I always seek 1st Edition Base Set cards which had very limited production.

2. Unique Treatment

One glance at a Rainbow Rare Charizard VMAX and you know it‘s special! Premium foil treatments distinguish rare cards from their common counterparts.

Holofoil, full arts, gold borders, etched texturing…these finishing touches make cards eye-catching and coveted. Much rarer than plain versions.

Why Condition is Paramount

A pristine card is a pretty penny! Let‘s compare possible prices based on condition:

PSA 9 Mint💎 20-50% of max value
Lightly Played♦️ <10% of max value

As you can see, flawless graded cards with 10 sub-scores retain incredible worth. A single scuff or mark can slash thousands off projected prices.

So keep those rare holos protected! Double sleeve, toploader, team bag. Handle like the crown jewels.

Tips For Valuing Your Cards

Hopefully I‘ve shed light on why 2 star rare holos hold such intrigue. Let‘s recap key points:

  • Inspect the rarity symbol – circles are common while 2 stars indicate special foiling
  • Note card #s and sets – 1st Editions and exclusives are ideal
  • Check condition closely – pristine is best, flaws tank value
