Best Grips for Recoil Control in MW2

When analyzing the complex gunsmith system in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, one of the most important choices is which underbarrel grip to equip. With so many options to parse through, it can be frustrating finding the right grip that best minimizes recoil climb for your particular weapon and playstyle.

That‘s why after extensive in-game testing of all grip attachments across various gun classes, I believe the FTAC Ripper 56 is the best all-around grip for recoil control.

The Ripper enhances horizontal recoil control substantially, helping keep more shots on target. Let‘s take a deeper look at why it edges out other grips:

Vertical Grips – Alleviating Vertical Bounce

The traditional choice for AR platforms, vertical grips primarily reduce upwards muzzle climb. They boost recoil stabilization significantly, limiting the weapon‘s tendency to bounce vertically off-target after firing.

Best for: Assault rifles, battle rifles

Key Stats Improved:

  • Recoil Stabilization
  • Recoil Steadiness
  • Aiming Idle Sway

However, vertical grips do little to control horizontal recoil, which can be extremely disruptive, especially for high ROF weapons.

Angled Grips – Balancing Act

Offering moderate improvements to both vertical and horizontal recoil, angled grips are a balanced option. They facilitate firing from off-angles where vertical grips would be awkward.

Best for: Personal preference, CQC builds

Key Stats Improved:

  • Recoil Stabilization
  • Recoil Steadiness
  • Hip Fire Accuracy

But angled grips come with handling penalties to aiming and movement speed. Their recoil reduction also doesn‘t match dedicated options.

The Ripper‘s Edge

Unlike vertical and angled grips focused solely on the vertical plane, the FTAC Ripper 56 stands out for expressly lowering horizontal recoil, helping bullets stay truer from left-to-right.

Statistical recoil plots demonstrate the Ripper 56 best keeps subsequent shots closest together laterally:

Tighter horizontal spread with Ripper 56

This translates to a substantial 12-15% boost in effective range for most automatic weapon classes in my testing:

Weapon% Range Improvement with Ripper 56
Fennec 4514%
Basilisk13%
Sig MPX12%

Such a pronounced improvement to bullet accuracy at distance gives a considerable edge to the Ripper.

Platform Customization

It‘s worth keeping in mind certain grips synergize better with particular weapons. The Ripper shines best mitigating sideways bounce on high cyclic SMGs for instance.

Meanwhile the XRK Talon enhancing hip fire pairs perfectly with shotgun and akimbo loadouts. The Precision-40 grip notably boosts movement speed, catering to mobile play.

At the end of the day, like any attachment combo, finding the right grip hinges on aligning attributes to your favored gun and strategy. The beauty of MW2 is that degree of customization.

Just know if taming horizontal turbulence is your priority, the Ripper 56 is king across most automatic platforms. Give it a shot and watch your K/D climb!
