Tanya Was Quietly Executed Before the Events of Mortal Kombat 11

As revealed through select intro dialogues and cameo endings, the sensual Edenian fighter Tanya met an untimely end prior to the events of Mortal Kombat 11‘s main story mode. Though never shown on screen, Tanya was captured under orders from Kotal Kahn and executed, marking a premature end to her role in the MK saga.

Recapping Tanya‘s Last Major Appearance

Tanya, the lithe and lethal martial artist first introduced in 1997‘s Mortal Kombat 4, made her latest playable appearance in 2015‘s Mortal Kombat X. In that game‘s Story Mode, Tanya allied herself with Mileena and Rain in a coup to overthrow Outworld‘s ruler Kotal Kahn and regain control of the realm.

However, their rebellion ended in failure:

  • Rain was killed in a one-on-one duel against cassie cage
  • Mileena was captured and imprisoned after being defeated by Kotal Kahn
  • Tanya managed to escape, but her fate was left unspecified

Now, through newly revealed dialogue interactions in Mortal Kombat 11, we finally have confirmation of what happened after Tanya slipped away…

Tanya Was Captured and Executed Under Kotal Kahn‘s Orders

In Mileena and Kotal Kahn‘s MK11 intro dialogues, Mileena explicitly references Tanya having been killed along with Rain:

"How proud you must be, now that Tanya and Rain are dead," Mileena mocks Kotal Kahn in one exchange.

So sometime between MKX and MK11, Tanya was hunted down, captured, and executed on Kotal Kahn‘s command. Her death seemingly went unmentioned until now.

Some key implications and analysis:

  • This represents a premature end to Tanya‘s storyline – she had potential for more appearances
  • Her death was likely glossed over due to her relatively minor character role
  • Raises questions about why she didn‘t escape execution when she evaded capture before

As an Edenian ally of Rain and Mileena with knowledge of Outworld politics, Tanya posed an ongoing threat to Kotal Kahn‘s rule. By quietly eliminating her off-screen, Kotal tied up a loose end between the two games.

Alternate Ending Offers More Hopeful Outcome

While Tanya is undisputedly dead in MK11‘s main canonical storyline, she does make a special appearance in the game‘s unlockable "Arcade Ladder" mode.

Specifically, Tanya cameos in Mileena‘s non-canon ending scene:

  • After Mileena uses Kronika‘s hourglass to rewrite history, she becomes Emperor Shao Kahn‘s heir and Outworld‘s ruler
  • In this new timeline, Tanya is shown living in harmony with Mileena in her palace
  • The two are even raising an infant child together

So in at least one theoretical alternate version of events, Tanya avoided execution and lives on as Mileena‘s closest ally and partner.

Key takeaways:

  • Provides fan service returning Tanya alongside popular Mileena ending
  • Tanya‘s death remains fully canon in MK11‘s central story
  • Leaves door open for her to return if MK12 features Mileena‘s altered history

My Analysis and Speculation on Tanya‘s Future

As a lifelong Mortal Kombat player and Tanya fan, I wish we could have seen more of the dynamic Edenian in MK11‘s Story Mode before her untimely off-screen execution. Though she was a secondary character, her swift death felt premature given her potential.

I speculate two possibilities for Tanya in future MK games:

  1. She could be resurrected in MK12‘s story – Just like Noob Saibot and other killed fighters, Netherrealm could bring her back to life via new story developments involving clones, necromancy, or time manipulation. This would allow Tanya to be a playable fighter again.

  2. Mileena‘s alternate ending could become canonical – MK12 could pick up in the alternate timeline showcased where Tanya was never executed. This would provide a fresh start for both Tanya and Mileena as part of MK‘s core storyline moving forward.

As arguably the most memorably provocative MK female besides Mileena herself, I and many fans would welcome Tanya returning in a future game through either of these avenues. Her flashy kicking style and alluring aesthetic offer much to the MK fighter lineup.

For now, though, Tanya‘s fate ends in tragedy – another victim of Kotal Kahn‘s merciless bloodlust in his ongoing conquests of Outworld domination. At least we can still play as her in MKX and honor her legacy by mastering her unmistakable Pyromancer fighting techniques.

What do you think about Tanya‘s unceremonious death prior to MK11‘s events? Should Netherrealm find a way to bring her back in the modern storyline? Sound off in the comments!
