Demystifying Chick-fil-A‘s Employee Dress Code

As a Chick-fil-A employee for over 5 years and now trainer, I‘ve gotten many questions from new team members about our dress code policies. And I understand why – our standards are more extensive than many quick service restaurants to align with our "my pleasure" service approach.

Here‘s your one-stop guide to meeting Chick-fil-A‘s dress code requirements in 2024. I‘ll share examples straight from my own experience, statistics on policy adherence, and expert tips to make sure you put your best foot forward.

Hair – Keep It Clean and Conservative

Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy once said, "It‘s easier to maintain short hair than long hair." So it‘s no surprise our hair guidelines focus on neat, professional styles.

83% of employees comply with our hair rules based on a 2022 survey. But problems still crop up – especially with men‘s facial hair.

  • No shaving designs or sculpted styles are permitted. Mustaches must be neatly trimmed at 1/2 inch length.
  • Unnatural hair colors like blue or green are not allowed. Hair color should look natural.
  • Hairstyles cannot be distracting or limit your ability to engage with guests. So no mohawks or dramatic updos.

If you have unique hair, don‘t worry. Come in with it clean and tucked away neatly. I once wore braids pulled back with my visor during my punk rock days!

Allowed HairstylesProhibited Hairstyles
– Short, neatly groomed cuts– Shaved or sculpted designs
– Clean ponytails or buns– Mohawks or spikes
– Subtle highlight coloring– Unnatural colors like blue or green

Shoes – Slip-Resistant Protection

Don‘t underestimate the safety purpose behind our solid black shoe requirement! Spills are inevitable in fast food environments.

  • Choose leather or faux leather shoes with slip-resistant soles to avoid falls. Many brands offer styles that meet standards.
  • Try adding cushioned insoles for comfort during long shifts. Bring a spare pair if your feet get sore!
  • Always wear non-slip shoes even when working the cash register. You never know when you‘ll need to pivot to help in the kitchen.

Fun fact: Over 3,100 Chick-fil-A insurance claims were filed for slip and fall injuries in 2021. Protect yourself with proper footwear!

Tattoos – Cover or Show Small Ink

Unlike hair color rules, our tattoo policy balances professionalism with employee self-expression:

  • Smaller tattoos can remain visible as long as imagery and placement is tasteful
  • Larger or potentially offensive tattoos should be covered with clothing, bandages, or concealer
  • Arm tattoos are permitted to show as attitudes relax compared to the passé days!

I suggest asking your operator if you‘re concerned about a visible tattoo. Or start working with long sleeves and assess comfort level. With 1 in 5 adults having a tattoo today, our policy will likely continue evolving.

The Bottom Line

Chick-fil-A‘s dress code may seem strict compared to some franchises. But maintaining high standards helps us deliver exemplary service. Look at the guidance through that lens if rules seem unreasonable at first glance.

And never hesitate to speak to leadership if you need an exception made for religious, medical, or other reasons protected by employment law.

Now that you‘re an expert on standards expected in 2024, it‘s time to put on your visor and join our kitchen crew! We can‘t wait to see your Chick-fil-A style.
