What is max level in WotLK Classic?

The maximum level you can reach in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic is level 80. When the Wrath of the Lich King expansion originally launched in 2008, it raised the level cap from 70 (in The Burning Crusade) to 80. The same level 80 cap applies to the 2022 re-release of the WotLK expansion as WotLK Classic.

How Long Does it Take to Reach Level 80?

According to expert analysis from top WoW site Icy Veins, leveling from 70-80 in Wrath of the Lich King Classic takes the average player 24-48 hours of playtime. This factors in completing quest lines, running dungeons, and general leveling.

However, world record pace was set by top WoW gamer Naowh hitting max level in just 9 hours after WotLK Classic‘s release. He achieved an incredible 1.8 million XP per hour rate by very efficiently grinding mobs. Most players will take a bit longer – getting to 80 within 1-2 days is considered very fast leveling.

My own experience getting to 70 took around 3 days playing fairly efficiently. If I had to guess for 80, I‘d plan for 4-5 days depending on playtime per day. I‘d be very happy getting there in under 72 hours / 3 days!

Gearing Up at Level 80

Reaching level 80 gives you access to item level 200+ epic gear, offering big upgrades from the level 70 gear most players are wearing. There are a number of different paths to gearing up:

  • Crafting: Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, and Tailoring recipes unlocked at level 80 let you craft epic quality gear to equip right away or sell for profits.
  • Reputations: Factions like The Sons of Hodir, The Kalu‘ak, and The Wyrmrest Accord offer epic gear at Exalted reputations.
  • Dungeons/Heroics: Running level 80 dungeons like Violet Hold and higher-difficulty heroics award epics.
  • Raids: Tier 7 raid gear from Naxxramas and Sartharion offers the best PvE items.
  • Wintergrasp: This world PvP zone offers up raid-quality epic rings, necks, and trinkets.
  • Badges of Heroism: These badges earned from dungeons/raids let you buy epic gear in Dalaran.

Icy Veins recommends having at least item level 187 gear before running heroics, 200+ before raiding, and 213+ to tackle hard modes. Getting to an average ilvl of 219 should be doable within the first month at level cap.

Professions are hugely important for max-level gearing. As an example, Blacksmithing weapons and armor can take a character far until raids. Leatherworking, Engineering, Enchanting, Jewelcrafting similarly offer great level 80 craftables.

What to Focus on at Level 80

Reaching level 80 opens up virtually endless goals to pursue at the new cap:

Gearing Priorities

Gearing up your character should be a top priority early on:

  • Craft your own epic gear if possible or buy BoE gear from others
  • Run heroic dungeons daily for badge epics and chances at drops
  • Research best pre-raid BiS lists to know what 5-mans drops/crafts to chase
  • Kill raid bosses weekly for tier gear – aim for full Naxxramas clears
  • Do Wintergrasp for easy-to-obtain PvP epics
  • Work reputations to Exalted for strong shoulder/head enchants

Professions

Professions become extremely valuable at max level:

  • Max out your primary professions to unlock lucrative high-level crafting recipes
  • Level secondary skills like First Aid, Fishing, Cooking to support raiding
  • Farm materials from Northrend zones or instances to supply crafted gear
  • Craft for yourself or sell for profits; many great high-level consumables

Achievements & Collections

Beyond raw gear and levels, achievements offer plenty to chase:

  • Hunt meta-achievements awarding titles, mounts, tabards
  • Clear challenging raid achievements for bragging rights
  • Explore the stories and zones you might have missed leveling
  • Level alts and see the other class stories in Northrend
  • Collect pets, mounts, tmog gear, recipes and more!

The list truly goes on – with so many epic 5-mans, raids, reputations, stories, and collectibles, hitting 80 is just the beginning of the adventures left in WotLK Classic!
