Everything You Need to Know About Allies in Fallout 76

Allies, introduced in the Wastelanders expansion, are the hottest new feature in Fallout 76. But what exactly is their purpose and are they really worth the effort? As a wasteland survivor and expert gamer, I‘ve spent hundreds of hours with allies – let me walk you through everything they have to offer.

Why Bother With Allies?

Alliesprovide some major benefits:

Companionship – It gets lonely out there in the wastes! Allies offer someone to chat with and liven up your C.A.M.P.

Base Defense – Allies actively defend against attacks. With high HP and weapons, they serve as an extra guard.

Quest Rewards – Daily ally quests provide XP, caps and loot. Great way to farm and level up!

Lover‘s Embrace – Romancing an ally gives a +5% XP buff for 3 hours – super useful!

Customization – Change ally outfits for unique looks. Great for theme builds.

But there are some downsides too…

Allies take up CAMP budget and building space. Their daily quests can feel repetitive. And they rarely wander far from their destination spot.

Overall though, I think the benefits outweigh the costs! Having an ally works wonders to liven up CAMPs.

Ally Purpose & Functionality

So what do allies actually do once you assign them to a CAMP? Let‘s break it down:

Defense & Attack Capabilities

Allies actively defend your CAMP if attacked, using equipped ranged or melee weapons.

  • With high HP, they serve as a damage sponge and distraction
  • They attack fast and prioritize players over creatures
  • Damage output is decent but gear dependent

Here are some observed stats:

AllyHPPreferred Weapon TypeDPS Range
Commander Daguerre2600Ranged15-25
Sofia Daguerre2200Ranged10-19
Beckett2400Melee20-29
Settler Forager2000Ranged12-21

So ally DPS is comparable to top-tier turrets, with more mobility and tankiness. Pretty decent for passive defense!

That said, allies won‘t match players or maxed turrets for damage output. And they can‘t be healed which limits lifespan. So they complement other defenses rather than replacing.

Daily Quests & Rewards

Allies offer repeatable daily quests with good XP and loot rewards:

  • XP: 100-800 XP per quest
  • Caps: Up to 100 caps
  • Misc Rewards: Crafting components, ammo, stimpacks, radaway, etc
  • Weapon/Armor: Chance for 1-3 star legendary gear

I highly recommend checking in with allies daily for quests. It takes 5 minutes and gives a reliable income stream!

What about the quests themselves? They generally follow simple "fetch this item/kill this creature" formats. A few stand outs:

  • Beckett‘s Bar Crawl – Guide Beckett to 3 different bars
  • Daguerre‘s Photos – Take pictures around Appalachia
  • Sofia‘s Botany – Collect rare medicinal plants

The location variety and Beckett‘s commentary keep these from getting too stale. Still, after a couple weeks you‘ll have seen all the variations.

Romance & Lover‘s Embrace

Flirting with Beckett or Commander Daguerre allows you to eventually "romance" them, with a touching finale scene at max relationship level. This also unlocks the Lover‘s Embrace perk:

+5% XP Gain For 3 Hours
Once a day, sleeping near your ally will give a 3 hour XP boost

This perk is probably allies‘ most underrated benefit. Five percent doesn‘t seem like much but it adds up fast with high Intelligence builds. It makes ally romance a top priority in my book!

Customization & CAMP Setup

Allies have different build budget/space requirements depending on their destination object. For example, Beckett fits nicely on the Small Backyard Patio.

You can also customize ally clothing with most atomic shop outfits. Change it up to match your CAMP theme! They‘ll wear these outfits exclusively within CAMP boundaries.

Some of my favorite combos:

  • Beckett + Black Prospector Outfit + Miner Hat with Light
  • Sofia + Medical Scrubs + Green Bandana
  • Daguerre + Military Fatigues + Army Helmet

When it comes to placement, allies can get stuck navigating complex multi-floor bases. I recommend a simple 1 story shelter with clear paths.

Places allies love to wander:

  • Kitchens + Dining Areas
  • Lounges/Living Rooms
  • Patio/Garden Areas

Make these areas ally-friendly with themed furniture like the bar counter or spring rider.

I‘m a big fan of the allies-only shelter concept:

With some effort, you can create lively hangout spaces that really showcase your allies!

Final Verdict: Allies in 2024

Nearly two years post-release, allies remain some of 76‘s most unique and practical features. Their versatility allows them to complement any playstyle:

  • Defenders appreciate the extra DPS and quest income
  • Builders enjoy customizing ally spaces
  • Lone wolves benefit from the lover‘s embrace perk
  • Social butterflies have lively new conversation partners

That said, their programming and AI is far from perfect. Pathing still gets confused, dialogues repeat, and quests get tedious after months. Facing enemies, human companions like Fallout 4‘s are still far superior.

But as an optional bit of life and spirit for CAMPs? Allies excel wonderfully. Their bright sides outweigh the flaws for most players.

So if you somehow haven‘t already unlocked allies, I highly recommend Beckett or Daguerre as starter options. Enjoy your new lively company, some free loot and maybe even romance! Allies are here to stay in Fallout 76.
