What‘s the difference between Final Fantasy XV and Royal Edition?

As a long-time Final Fantasy fan and content creator focused on the legendary JRPG series, few games have captured my attention as much as Final Fantasy XV. Its engrossing world, gripping story and innovative real-time combat helped redefine the franchise.

Yet as amazing as the base FFXV game was at launch in 2016, Square Enix bolstered its crown jewel with a steady stream of DLC, expansions and enhancements over the following year. Culminating in 2018’s aptly named “Royal Edition” – a definitive package bundling the full FFXV experience into one must-play title.

What‘s included in the Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition?

Straight away, the most significant addition that the Royal Edition brings to the table is the inclusion of all previously released DLC and expansions. We’re talking vital story episodes helping flesh out main heroes Gladio, Prompto and Ignis. Multiplayer expansion Comrades allowing cooperative questing. Gear and item packs. Off-road driving skills and much more.

By bundling all additional content into one package, the Royal Edition makes enjoying everything FFXV has to offer simple and accessible in one great value purchase.

Expanded Insomnia Map

Beyond DLC, the Royal Edition adds entirely new content to expand the game world even further. The most sizable addition is an extended map of Insomnia – the crown city players witness falling in FFXV’s emotional opening.

Now you can explore its devastated districts and underground subways first-hand. Admire the striking architecture blending modern skyscrapers with gothic infrastructure. Discover hidden secrets and treasures. Marvel at dynamic weather like rainfall cascading upon crumbled city streets.

It’s a hauntingly beautiful location, adding to the game’s scope and providing critical context to pivotal story events.

New Modes, Gear and Gameplay

On top of the expanded map, the Royal Edition introduces new challenges for veterans and newcomers alike:

  • First Person Mode – An immersive new way to experience Eos from Noctis’ perspective. Ideal for absorbing intricate details or appreciating the kingdom’s grand vistas.
  • Armiger Unleashed – After collecting all 13 Royal Arms, activate this upgraded Armiger form granting Noctis godly strength and weapon mastery.
  • New Bosses – Confront menacing new beasts like the three-headed hound Cerberus and Omega – constructions of ancient technology and magic.
  • New Gear – Outfit Noctis and his retinue with stylish new raiment offering useful buffs and bonuses.

Combined with the additional story content, these features addeven more substance to an already content-rich journey.

Is the FFXV Royal Edition Worth It?

For any Final Fantasy fan yet to enjoy FFXV, the Royal Edition’s value is frankly outstanding. All major DLC, gear, modes and meaningful story expansions bundled together at one affordable price point.

As VG247 summarizes aptly in their review:

“Royal Edition offers good value even to newcomers, and it’s fairly essential for fans who’ve already played and completed the game.”

Critics and gamers widely agree – the Royal Edition represents the complete, definitive Final Fantasy XV experience.

It takes an already tremendous modern RPG classic and expands its scope even wider and deeper again through critical world-building, narratively meaningful character episodes and exciting new challenges and abilities to master.

For me as both a lifelong FF fan and creator constantly exploring gaming’s richest treasures to share with others – Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition stands tall. It’s quite possibly my favorite game of the last generation, and onewhose sublime world I can’t wait to dive back into over and over again.
