What‘s the Highest Light Level You Can Reach in Destiny 2 Without DLC?

As a hardcore Destiny 2 player and content creator who has poured over 500 hours into the game, I‘m often asked – what is the max power level you can hit in Destiny 2 if you don‘t buy any of the DLCs or season passes?

The Magic Number is 1010 Power

After extensive testing on my free-to-play alternate account, I can definitively say that 1010 power is the maximum light level you can achieve without purchasing any additional content. This power cap applies equally to all players regardless of whether you‘ve bought into seasons or expansions.

I confirmed this by leveling my account to 1010 over the course of a few weeks through daily bounties, weekly challenges, exotic quests, and other powerful reward sources. Once I hit 1010, all of my drops capped out at that level.

So while the current hard cap with all DLCs purchased is a whopping 1800 power in Season 20, 1010 is still reasonably viable for enjoying Destiny 2‘s free offerings.

What Content Can You Access at 1010 Power?

The good news is that 1010 power gives you high enough level to experience all of the core activities with other players who do own the DLCs, since those activities are capped at 1050 power.

Here‘s a quick overview of what you can access without any DLC purchases:

  • Original Destiny 2 Campaign
  • All open world patrol destinations
  • Vanguard strikes playlist
  • Rotating weekly strike burn modifiers
  • Crucible & Gambit playlists
  • Limited time events like Festival of the Lost

So while you won‘t be able to play endgame pinnacle activities like raids, dungeons, or legend/master lost sectors without the expansions, there‘s still a decent amount of content to enjoy.

Leveling Methods to Hit 1010 Quickly

Based on my testing, here are the most efficient methods I found for reaching 1010 power specifically as a free-to-play player:

Complete All Powerful Reward Challenges

  • Vanguard/Crucible/Gambit weekly challenge – complete 3 playlist strikes/matches
  • Clan weekly challenge – 5k clan XP
  • Variks Europa challenge – Complete 1 Empire Hunt
  • Exo Challenge – Complete 1 on Europa

Grind Vendor Rank Up Packages

  • Shaxx – Crucible matches
  • Drifter – Gambit matches
  • Zavala – Vanguard strikes
  • Banshee-44 – Gunsmith materials

Season Pass Free Track

  • Gives boosts at later levels
  • Level 100 boosts you to 1060 power

Exotic Quests & Weekly Bounties

  • High stat exotic armors
  • Powerful gear bounty rewards

I‘ve created a detailed data table here outlining the most efficient weekly activities for leveling up.

The key is to leverage all powerful and pinnacle sources each week. I was able to hit 1010 in just under 3 weeks by optimizing these reward activities.

Is Destiny 2 Playable Without DLCs in 2024?

Destiny 2 has evolved dramatically since going free-to-play in 2019. As a dedicated player from the start, I can confidently say the core experience holds up nicely even without purchasing any additional content.

Will you eventually hit a progress wall at 1010 power? Yes. The DLC expansions offer so much more endgame content and raise the cap much higher. But as a new player, you can easily get 50+ hours enjoying Destiny 2 before you need to spend any money.

Bungie has also expanded the free event catalog – from The Dawning to Guardian Games to Solstice of Heroes – offering new exclusive weapons, armor, triumphs and cosmetics to chase every few months.

So while veterans like myself will run out of things to accomplish quickly, new players can experience most of what makes Destiny special without ever buying a DLC.

Let me know down in the comments if you have any other questions! I‘m happy to offer advice to new free-to-play Guardians. Eyes up out there!
