When Did 1080p Come Out? A Gamer‘s Perspective on the Rise of Full HD

  • 1080p (1920×1080) – Over 60% and even higher for console gaming

For many years to come, I predict 1080p will continue dominating the gaming landscape. The resolution nicely matches what the human eye can perceive at typical screen sizes and viewing distances. And modern GPUs can readily drive high frame rates at 1080p rather than struggling with the demands of 4K.

However, nothing is forever in the fast-moving tech world. Emerging display technologies like MicroLED and future GPU leaps will eventually enable higher resolutions like 4K and 8K to replace 1080p as the everyday standard a decade or more from now. Until then, gamers can enjoy reaping the benefits of 1080p gaming built on years of incremental tech improvements that brought Full HD to fruition.
