When Should I Fight Malenia in Elden Ring? The Ultimate Preparation Guide

As an avid Elden Ring fan and content creator focused on bleeding-edge dexterity builds, one question I get asked constantly is: "when should I fight Malenia?" This elegant, fallen empyrea is undoubtedly the toughest optional boss FromSoftware has ever designed. I cannot count the times she has cut me down just as victory seemed imminent. But after countless attempts and experiments with different strategies, I can now confidently claim to have mastered the art of toppling this goddess of rot.

In this extensive guide, I will cover everything you need to know to stand a fighting chance against Malenia, including recommended level, weapon upgrade level, effective builds, combat strategies, lore implications and more. While conquering her solo is supremely rewarding, do not hesitate to summon help if you need it. Even the best Tarnished warriors have struggled mightily with this peerless swordswoman. Now brace yourself, and let us begin the quest to defeat Malenia!

What Level & Upgrade Level is Recommended?

I would strongly advise being around level 150 before attempting Malenia, though skilled players have defeated her as low as level 125. She hits ludicrously hard even with 60 Vigor and heavy armor, so every extra bit of health, stamina and defense helps. As for weapon level, a Somber Smithing Stone level of +10 (equivalent to a standard +25 weapon) is recommended. The key is maximizing your damage output via upgrades so you can end the fight quickly by staggering her out of combos.

Recommended LevelMinimum Weapon Upgrade
150Somber +10 / Standard +25

I would also highly recommend completing the Secret Haligtree area before Malenia if possible. This provides more experience, amazing talismans like the Dragoncrest Greatshield to boost resistances, and upgrade materials via mining. Invest thoroughly in your build of choice before initiating a duel with this master swordswoman.

How to Reach Malenia & Recommended Progression

Malenia resides in the glittering, frozen city of Elphael beyond the Drainage Channel grace hidden deep in the Mohgwyn Palace. To access this area, you first need to find both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion in the Mountaintops of the Giants.

The left half is held by the Albinauric woman in the snowy village. The right half is found on Commander Niall in the Castle Sol legacy dungeon. Defeating this duo boss alone takes considerable skill, so be adequately prepared! Once you solve the medallion puzzle, an illusory wall behind Castle Sol leads down into the depths towards the Haligtree proper.

This labyrinthine, rot-infused dungeon crawls with tougher enemies than anywhere else in Elden Ring. I cannot stress enough how vital it is to complete the entire Haligtree before dueling Malenia herself. This includes optional areas like the Prayer Room with its ancient somber smithing stones. Not only do you obtain more upgrade materials, but this deadly area yields masses of runes to level up with. Surviving here alone proves your readiness for Malenia.

Bleed Builds Destroy Malenia – What Weapons & Stats Work Best

Now, I know faith, sorcery and pure strength builds have viable tools against Malenia. But if you really want to shred this goddess‘s health bar, then bleed weapons & Dexterity/Arcane is the ultimate path to choose.

My own build uses a Rivers of Blood +10 katana with 60 Dex and 50 Arcane. This weapon‘s unique Corpse Piler ash of war allows safe ranged attacks that chunk her poise and apply devastating hemorrhage. Each blade also has innate bleed buildup over 100, meaning consistent blood loss even from normal strikes. For talismans, I utilize Lord of Blood‘s Exultation, Rotten Winged Sword Insignia and more to bolster successive attacks. Others recommend powerstanced Bleed infused Uchigatanas as even deadlier offense.

In either case, prioritize pumping Dexterity, Arcane and Vigor equally to maximize bleed damage and survivability. Medium load with strong physical defense armor helps withstand her relentless aggression. DO NOT get greedy spamming Corpse Piler or other arts – 2-3 hits safely spaced between dodges is the key. Keep moving and let blood loss whittle her health away. With practice, you can absolutely melt her first phase HP this way.

Summoning Ashes & Strategies – Mimic Still Viable Post-Nerf!

Spirit ashes remain a perfectly viable tactic against Malenia, especially post patch 1.07 with improved ranged aggression. While the Mimic Tear was nerfed from its original broken status, I still highly recommend it upgraded to +10. Having a clone with similar stats and gear pulls aggro during phase 1 and allows breathing room to punish with your own arts and spells.

Other fantastic choices include Tiche, Lhutel the Headless, Latenna and an Ancestral Follower upgraded with high vigor and bleed weapons. Tiche & Lhutel are very aggressive and tanky, able to withstand chains of Waterfowl effectively. Be sure to give ashes like Latenna armor boosting virtual HP to increase their survivability.

When Malenia transforms in phase 2, avoid summoning spirits – they will likely die instantly to endless Scarlet Aeonia nukes. Instead play cautiously on Torrent, sprint from flower attacks immediately and only punish her delayed thrust. The rot explosion can still kill even through 60 Vigor + protective talismans so give it immense space! Have infinite FP flasks ready for repeated corpse piler punishes until she finally falls.

Lore Analysis – What Is Malenia‘s Story? Miquella‘s Role and More

While I have discussed plenty of practical strategies for defeating her, some context on Malenia‘s lore and character may help understand this tragic villain. She hails from the Eternal City and is an Empyrean daughter of Radagon and Queen Marika, blessed with red hair and unmatched skill with the blade. Her twin brother Miquella had eternal youth, and created the Haligtree to try curing Malenia‘s Scarlet Rot disease.

In a desperate bid to stop the demigod General Radahn‘s territory expansion in Caelid, Malenia unleashed the true extent of her scarlet rot in an act of desperation. This resulted in a stalemate that devastated Caelid into a rotted wasteland. Yet even as the rot claimed her mind and body, she still returned to the Haligtree and rests by Miquella‘s cocoon, guarding her beloved brother eternally even as she withers away.

When we fight Malenia, she is awakened from her dreaming and even more overcome by scarlet rot than her prior battle with Radahn. Despite her body and mind failing, her dedication to her sibling gives Malenia unmatched poise and lethal speed with the blade. Only by giving the fight our all do we finally fell this blade of Miquella and claim victory. I almost feel guilty putting her back to rest!

My Personal Story – How Many Tries Did Malenia Take You?

Let me tell you Skeletons – when I first walked through those shining golden fog doors, I did not expect Malenia‘s onslaught to be even worse than rumors indicated. Even my fully prepared Rivers of Blood build barely withstood 2 hits from her endless chains of strikes. And her Waterfowl Dance animation cancelling? Nearly threw my controller out the window screams of rage it caused initially.

But as always, perseverance pays off eventually. After hours of attempts across 3 days, learning to dodge every move frame perfectly, I had her HP down to 10% in phase 1! Then she suddenly healed back to FULL HEALTH even despite my blood loss and brought out that cursed rot flowered blade. Summoning my Mimic, we managed to lure Malenia into her Aeonia special and narrowly dodged the blooming carnage. My jaw dropped as it nuked my poor mimic into oblivion instantly!

In the end, the winning run came down to perfect RNG and spacing. Getting Waterfowl ONLY once in phase 1, ensuring my mimic survived as tank, and unloading 4 full corpse pillars to stagger her, I riposted Malenia‘s head clean off her shoulders. 221 attempts…by FAR my highest ever for any FromSoftware boss. But besting this goddess of rot and blade now ranks as my proudest achievement as a gamer EVER!

I cannot wait to claim her Hand of Malenia katana and add it to my collection. Please share your own Malenia experiences in the comments, and I hope this guide better prepares all you brave Tarnished for your own iconic showdown! Fear not the rot, and let us topple this strongest of Empyreans together!
