Which Assassin‘s Creed Games Are 60 FPS on PS5?

Straight away, the Assassin‘s Creed games that currently support native or patched 60 FPS modes when playing on a PlayStation 5 are:

  • Assassin‘s Creed Origins
  • Assassin‘s Creed Odyssey
  • Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla

I will analyze and compare the 60 FPS situation across all three more below. First, let‘s quickly summarize what 60 FPS patches exist for the rest of the AC franchise on PS5:

Game60 FPS on PS5?
Assassin‘s Creed SyndicateNo
Assassin‘s Creed UnityNo
Assassin‘s Creed RogueNo
Assassin‘s Creed IV Black FlagNo
Assassin‘s Creed III RemasteredNo
Assassin‘s Creed: The Ezio CollectionNo

Sadly there has been no official word from Ubisoft yet on 60 FPS patches for any of the above entries. Now let‘s dive deeper into the AC games so glorious enhanced for PS5…

Assassin‘s Creed Origins

  • PS4 Pro Frame Rate: Locked 30 FPS
  • PS5 Frame Rate: 60 FPS (with next-gen patch)
  • Patch Release Date: January 27th, 2021

Since the PS5 backwards compatibility program was unveiled, one of the most requested features from AC fans was a 60 FPS update. After initial uncertainty from Ubisoft, they delivered! Since late January 2021, players can admire ancient Egypt at double the frames.

Digital Foundry analysis showed an essentially locked 60 FPS on PS5 even in intense scenes with lots of NPCs or environmental effects. Only minimal dips occur in specific locations. Overall, this offers so much better fluidity and response than the PS4 Pro‘s sometimes struggling 30 FPS lock.

As an avid fan who sunk over 75 hours into Origins‘ sublime world, I cannot overstate the massive difference 60 FPS makes on PS5. Traversal and combat feel massively upgraded at higher frame rates with much tighter control. Ubisoft absolutely made the right call catering to fans here.

Assassin‘s Creed Odyssey

  • PS4 Pro Frame Rate: 30 FPS with adaptive quality drops
  • PS5 Frame Rate: 60 FPS (with next-gen patch)
  • Patch Release Date: January 27th, 2021

On the exact same day as the Origins patch, Ubisoft also boosted Assassin‘s Creed Odyssey up to 60 glorius frames per second on PS5. This involved unlocked frame rates combined with significantly faster loading times.

Previously on PS4, Odyssey used adaptive quality settings to try maintaining its 30 FPS lock during graphically intense scenes. But this time on PS5, Digital Foundry analysis saw only minor frame rate dips below 60 FPS even in busy towns like Korinth.

I found this 60 FPS patch completely revitalised Odyssey on PS5. The massive ancient Greek open world looks and runs better than ever before. Naval combat especially gets a huge boost from the faster frame rate given the faster rotation of the camera.

Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla

  • PS5 Quality Mode Frame Rate: 30 FPS @ 4K resolution
  • PS5 Performance Mode Frame Rate: 60 FPS @ dynamic 4K resolution
  • Mode Release Date: November 12th, 2020 (launch day!)

Excitingly, Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla included 60 FPS support at launch for next-gen consoles! Players can toggle between a Quality mode prioritising visuals at Native 4K/30 FPS, or a Performance mode running up to 60 FPS at a dynamic 4K resolution.

Considering the enormity of Valhalla‘s world, the Performance mode does an amazing job at hitting 60 FPS for a majority of the time according to multiple Digital Foundry analyses. Only certain cutscenes and some NPC-heavy sections see minor dips.

Choosing Performance mode was an absolute no-brainer for me with Valhalla on PS5. I want to experience this stunning Viking open world with the highest possible frame rates and snappiest response when exploring terrain or battling saxons!

So in summary, Valhalla impressively shipped with 60 FPS support on next-gen, while Origins and Odyssey both received excellent patched updates shortly after in early 2021.

Which game could most use a 60 FPS patch?

If I had to choose one other AC game most in need of a 60 FPS upgrade, it would be Assassin‘s Creed Unity. Arriving in 2014, Unity was infamously plagued by terrible optimisation issues with frequent frame rate drops below 30 FPS on PS4.

However, multiple tests have shown that when played on PS5 hardware, Unity is capable of essentially locked 60 FPS for a majority of the time without any patching required! This suggests the game is CPU bound instead of GPU bound.

As a result, I strongly believe Ubisoft should formally patch Unity for 60 FPS profiles on PS5/Xbox Series X to resolve its prior performance woes. Unity showcases one of the most breathtaking recreations of Paris ever constructed in gaming, so current-gen players deserve better performance to appreciate it fully!

There is clearly appetite too based on other fan requests online. And given the positive reception to 60 FPS updates for Origins and Odyssey, I am optimistic Ubisoft could commit resources to enhancing past AC titles further over time.

The dream: Ezio Trilogy at 60 glorious FPS

While any form of backwards compatibility enhancement is welcome, the dream scenario as an AC superfan would be 60 FPS support added to the Ezio Trilogy (AC II, Brotherhood, Revelations). These seminal entries defined the formula that has delighted fans ever since.

Sadly these classics remain locked at 30 FPS or lower on PS5. But when playing them, the aging visuals and simpler geometry suggest the power of current-gen hardware could potentially push frame rates much higher.

Therefore, if Ubisoft announced 60 FPS patches or remasters of the iconic Ezio games, it would spark jubilant scenes across the community! We will have to wait and see if this dream comes to fruition down the track…
