God of War (2018) Stands Tall as the Only Native PS5 God of War Game

As an ardent God of War fan, it‘s a frequent question I get – which God of War games can you play on the PS5? As of now, there‘s only one: the universally-acclaimed 2018 reboot that propelled Kratos into stunning Norse mythology.

God of War on PS5 runs at silky-smooth 60 FPS and sharp 4K resolution thanks to a substantial next-gen upgrade patch. It remains a graphical showcase for Sony‘s beastly console. The icing on the cake? Buttery-smooth load times and exemplary use of the DualSense controller‘s haptic feedback.

And on November 9th, the hotly-anticipated Ragnarök launches on both PS5 and PS4, wrapping up Kratos and Atreus‘ epic Norse saga…for now, at least.

The Definitive God of War Experience

God of War‘s PS5 upgrade brings the intense, cinematic action into cutting-edge fidelity. Check out these enhancements:

The results are mesmerizing – blistering combat that blurs with scintillating magic sparkles. Lavish vistas brimming with otherworldly detail. Architecture and character models so lifelike you feel you could reach out and touch them. And oh my, those load times…restoring from death is practically instant.

This is next-gen.

Tempering Expectations for Past God of War Games

I must inject a reality check. How feasible is it for the earlier games to receive full-blown PS5 overhauls? Santa Monica Studio has not announced plans to remake any pre-2018 games, but their potential on PS5‘s cutting-edge hardware is staggering to imagine.

Until then, previous God of War titles – spanning from the original Vengeance trilogy to the epic PSP adventures – remain accessible on PS5 via streaming only. This includes:

  • God of War 1
  • God of War: Ghost of Sparta
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • God of War II
  • God of War: Ascension
  • God of War III

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can stream PS3 entries. Sadly, due to PS3 emulation difficulties, downloading them to PS5 is still an insurmountable task…for now, at least.

God of War Sales Figures Show an Unstoppable Force

God of War dominates as one of PlayStation‘s quintessential exclusives alongside stalwarts like Uncharted, Gran Turismo and Ratchet & Clank. Let‘s examine the staggering sales success:

God of War GameCopies Sold
God of War (2005)Over 4.6 million
God of War II (2007)Over 4.2 million
God of War III (2010)Over 5.2 million
God of War (2018)Over 23 million

These astronomical figures cement Kratos as the face of PlayStation – an iconic antihero selling truckloads of hardware. 2018‘s reboot propelled the franchise into rarified fortunes.

As for Ragnarök? Over 4 million pre-orders and counting. Santa Monica has another slam dunk incoming.

The Future Journey of God of War on PS5

Ragnarök signals the end for our beloved Ghost of Sparta in the Norse realms. But the future remains radiantly bright. In a 2021 interview, Santa Monica Studio head Cory Barlog said:

"We have plenty more Norse mythology to explore in the future."

This suggests the door is still wide open for PlayStation 5 (and beyond) to host Kratos‘ continuing odyssey through the Nine Realms. But where could the infamous ashen-skinned warrior wind up next? The possibilities captivate the imagination.

Here are just a few ideas for settings I‘d love to see Kratos explore throughout an enduring PS5 lifespan:

  • Vanaheim – The lush and vivid home of the Vanir that dazzled in Ragnarök‘s trailers. So much worldbuilding potential!
  • Muspelheim – A scorching realm of primordial fire that houses the legendary Surtr. Now we‘re talking!
  • Siberia – Blend Russian mythology as Kratos quests during the era of Genghis Khan‘s conquests!

As you can see, my inner game developer envisions ambitious new frontiers for everyone‘s favoriteFPSafter God of War Ragnarök‘s credits roll. But wherever Kratos ultimately winds up throughout the PS5‘s lengthy lifecycle, one thing is certain…

…I‘ll be ripping and tearing right there alongside him!
