Which Pokémon Actually Have 4 Evolutions?

As a hardcore Pokémon fan, I‘m always curious about which Pokémon have the most evolutions. There‘s been some talk about certain Pokémon having 4 evolutions, but is that really true? Let‘s investigate!

The short answer is no – there are currently no Pokémon with 4 distinct evolution lines. However, a few come close when you count branching evolutions or special conditions that lead to multiple final forms.

Burmy Has 4 Different Forms

The Pokémon that arguably comes closest to 4 evolutions is Burmy from Generation 4. Here‘s a quick overview:

  • Burmy is the base unevolved form
  • A male Burmy will always evolve into Mothim at level 20 (100% chance)
  • A female Burmy will evolve into Wormadam at level 20, but the cloak form depends on Burmy‘s current cloak when evolving:
    • Plant Cloak – 50% chance
    • Sandy Cloak – 25% chance
    • Trash Cloak – 25% chance

So in total there are 4 possible outcomes – male Mothim, Plant Cloak Wormadam, Sandy Cloak Wormadam, and Trash Cloak Wormadam. It‘s the most evolutions of any single Pokémon species!

Other Interesting Branching Evolutions

Here are some other Pokémon with cool branching evolutions that result in multiple final forms:

  • Poliwhirl: Evolves into Poliwrath with Water Stone or Politoed when traded with King‘s Rock
  • Slowpoke: Evolves into Slowbro naturally or Slowking when traded with King‘s Rock
  • Tyrogue: Evolves based on highest base stat – Hitmonlee (Attack), Hitmonchan (Defense), or Hitmontop (HP)
  • Clamperl: Evolves into Huntail with DeepSeaTooth or Gorebyss with DeepSeaScale
  • Rockruff: Evolves into Lycanroc Midday Form at level 25 or Midnight Form from 5pm – 5am
  • Vivillon: Over 20 patterns available based on real world geography

As you can see, these Pokémon have very cool and unique requirements to evolve into multiple possibilities!

What About Future Evolutions?

With new generations constantly being added to the Pokémon world, there‘s always potential for a Pokémon line with 4 evolutions to be introduced.

Some fans speculate that regional variants like Galarian Yamask or Hisuian Sneasel lines could expand in future games. And GameFreak is known for giving unexpected new evolutions to older Pokémon like Sirfetch‘d.

I‘m hoping we might see a 4 evolution line, or even more complex branching, in the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet/Violet games. As a content creator myself, I‘d love to make an updated guide video breaking down any future Pokémon with 4 or more evolutions!

The Evolution Expert‘s Take

While no Pokémon currently meets the technical criteria for having 4 separate evolutions, Burmy, Poliwhirl, and others come remarkably close with their branched development paths and special conditions. As a passionate Pokémon expert, I love sharing in-depth insights on these complex evolutionary mechanics with fellow fans!

What do you think the odds are we‘ll get a true 4 evolution line someday? Which existing Pokémon should get an expanded evolution tree? Let me know in the comments!
