Cynder – Spyro‘s Main Squeeze

Without a doubt, Cynder is considered Spyro‘s primary love interest and girlfriend throughout the various Spyro continuities. Introduced in The Legend of Spyro trilogy, Cynder began as an adversary, corrupted by the main villain Malefor. However, Spyro freed Cynder from the darkness and she became a steadfast ally.

Over the course of the trilogy, Spyro and Cynder form a close bond as they battle Malefor‘s forces. By the climatic events of Dawn of the Dragon, they have evolved into a couple – fighting side-by-side and literally chained together. Their romance is cemented in the final scene as they gaze into each other‘s eyes.

So in the main Spyro mythology, Cynder and Spyro are soulmates destined to be together. Their romance fanbase even coined the term "Spynder" to describe the pairing.

Sparks Fly in Skylanders Academy

The recent Netflix animated series Skylanders Academy provided a fresh take on the Spyro universe. The show portrayed a teenage Spyro still learning to control his abilities in the Skylander training program.

Cynder appears as a cadet as well, and she clearly has a crush on Spyro. But he seems largely oblivious and distracted by his hero training and hijinks with his best friend Gill Grunt.

However, another female candidate emerges – the crystalline dragon Skylander Flashwing. In episode 9, Spyro and Flashwing are paired on a romantic love cruise for the school dance. They actually seem to hit it off pretty well and might have shared a spark.

So while Cynder makes her interest evident, Spyro appears to play the field in Skylanders Academy. But his one-on-one cruise time with Flashwing suggests she could be his next romantic endeavor.

When Passion Burns Out

Looking at other Spyro storylines, there is less emphasis on his personal relationships. In the classic Spyro the Dragon trilogy on PS1, romance was not a priority. Spyro was busy roasting Gnorcs and collecting gems to worry about dating.

A potential love interest named Ember does make some appearances. An enthusiastic pink dragoness, Ember clearly has a crush on Spyro and believes they are destined to marry. But Spyro seems oblivious to her affection.

So across the various Spyro titles, continuity reboots, and expanded universe – Spyro‘s girlfriends come and go. But one flame continuously burns bright – his passion for protecting the dragon realms! Romance will have to take a back seat to this noble purple dragon warrior‘s adventures.
