Why Does Ash Have a Rat?

As a long-time Apex Legends player and content creator, I was shocked when the ice-cold Simulacrum Ash was revealed to have a random pet rat perched on her metallic shoulder. But the rat is far from random – it serves a crucial narrative purpose. According to lead animator Moy Parra, "It allowed us to show a bit of humanity from the character, without compromising the character itself." So the rat represents the tiniest glimpse into Ash‘s buried humanity and empathy – qualities that her traumatic transformation into a Simulacrum stripped away.

The History of Dr. Ashleigh Reid That Led to the Merciless Simulacrum Ash

Ash was originally Dr. Ashleigh Reid, an elite pilot and mercenary born in the lawless Frontier. According to EA‘s official backstory, she learned from a young age to rely only on herself in order to survive. Her exceptional combat and survival abilities soon caught the attention of Kuben Blisk, leader of the notorious Apex Predators mercenary group. He hired her for a lucrative but dangerous heist to steal experimental fuel from the scientists working in Olympus.

However, things went violently awry. According to the "Stories from the Outlands" trailer "Ashes to Ash", Ashleigh‘s attempt to infiltrate the laboratory trigged a deadly self-destruct sequence. Though she successfully escaped with the experimental fuel, the resulting explosions critically injured Ashleigh and destroyed the entire facility. She sustained catastrophic physical trauma, mortally wounding her original human body.

The Technology That Transformed a Human into a Simulacrum

Luckily, Ashleigh‘s brain survived the detonation mostly intact. This allowed horizon scientist Dr. Reid (no relation) to transplant Ashleigh‘s brain into a robotic Simulacrum shell. This highly advanced technology essentially creates a robot with a copied human consciousness. According to the Titanfall fandom wiki, the Simulacrum transfer process involves making a complete holographic scan of the subject‘s brain, storing their personality and memories digitally. This digital consciousness can then be downloaded into any metallic Simulacrum frame.

However, reconstructed Simulacrums rarely retain full continuity with their former human selves. The Simulacrum transfer procedure – especially the traumatic destruction of her original body – tampered with Ashleigh Reid‘s brain. This ultimately transformed her into the much more ruthless and aggressive Simulacrum known as simply "Ash".

Ash‘s Abilities and Gameplay as a Highly Effective Apex Legend

As an Apex Legend, Ash utilizes her Simulacrum technology and combat programming to great effect. According to the Gamespot article "Apex Legends Season 11 Review", Ash‘s unique abilities make her a "strong hunter" feared across the Apex Games battlefield:

  • Passive – Marks recently killed players and reveals their allies‘ current locations to allow finishing off squads
  • Tactical – Tears open a one-way portal allowing her squad to ambush enemies
  • Ultimate – Marks a targeted location where a Phase Breach will open, teleporting Ash and her team across the map

These powerful abilities enable Ash to aggressively pursue enemy squads, swiftly infiltrate locations using her Phase Breach, and ruthlessly hunt down attempting fleers.

According to Apex Tracker statistics aggregating data from thousands of matches, Ash currently has strengthened win rates:

Win Rate8.2%
K/D Ratio1.56
Damage per Match345

Her popularity also remains consistently high each season. She maintains a 20-30% pick rate amongst pro players and currently ranks in the top half of all Legends in terms of effectiveness.

What Could the Future Hold for Ash in Apex Lore?

As Apex Legend‘s lore continues evolving season after season, where could Ash‘s dramatic storyline go next? Will the empathy hinted at by her pet rat ever break back through to the surface? Or will she maintain her merciliess Simulacrum persona as she pursues bloody victory in the Apex Games?

Personally, I‘m fascinated to see Respawn build more dimension into such a ruthless yet complex character. Perhaps her humanity could reemerge under the right circumstances. Her rat companion proves there are still glimmers of her buried former identity that could potentially push back through. But would Ash even want her old weaker humanity back…or has she fully transformed into an apex predator who only values victory and prowess? Either way, I cannot wait to see how her utterly captivating character arc plays out!
