Why I Can‘t Find Skyrim Legendary Edition on Steam?

The Skyrim Legendary Edition was essentially a bundled package of the base Skyrim game plus all DLCs that had released up until that point. It provided a convenient way for new players to get everything in one purchase.

However, in 2016 Bethesda released the Special Edition, which made the Legendary Edition redundant. Here‘s a more in-depth look at what happened and why you can no longer find the Legendary Edition on Steam.

The Rise and Fall of the Legendary Edition

The Legendary Edition was released in June 2013 as a compilation bundle for Skyrim. It included the base game, Dawnguard DLC, Hearthfire DLC, and Dragonborn DLC – essentially packaging all existing content.

Why the Legendary Edition Was Retired

When the Skyrim Special Edition released in October 2016, it made the Legendary Edition redundant:

  • The Special Edition included all Legendary DLCs
  • With improved graphics and 64-bit stability, the Special Edition superseded the original
  • Legendary owners even got a free Special Edition upgrade

So with the Special Edition containing all content, the Legendary Edition was no longer needed.

What Happened to Legendary Edition Owners

Legendary Edition owners were automatically granted free Special Edition upgrades. Your DLC access carries over – simply enable the DLCs via Properties > DLC in the Special Edition Library entry.

So existing owners have essentially gotten an enhanced version for free.

Where You Can Still Get the Legendary Edition

While no longer on Steam, you can find Legendary Edition game keys on sites like Eneba and G2A. However, I‘d only recommend it for specific modding uses, not general play.

For most, the free Special Edition upgrade is recommended for stability and newer mod compatibility.

The End of an Era

While unavailable on Steam, the Legendary Edition marked the end of a generation. Its retirement makes way for the improved Special Edition to carry the torch forward.
