Why is Ghost of Tsushima Director‘s Cut $70? A Breakdown of the Value

The main reason Ghost of Tsushima Director‘s Cut costs $70 on PS5 is because of the sheer amount of content added with this version, putting it more in line with a full-priced new release. As a gaming industry analyst, I‘ve assessed the upgrades and believe the pricing is justified.

PS5 Game Price Inflation

First, it‘s important to understand the context around pricing increases this generation. The $70 price tag has become the new norm for flagship PS5 titles like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. This reflects ballooning development costs – current estimates put production budgets between $100-$150 million for top titles.

When accounting for inflation, games are cheaper now than ever before:

Launch YearOriginal PriceInflation-Adjusted Price
2006$60$85
2020$70$70

So while $70 may seem expensive, relatively speaking gamers are getting better value than the PS3/Xbox 360 era. Software prices have not kept pace with both inflation and soaring dev costs.

Quantity and Quality of New Content

Now, onto the additions in Ghost of Tsushima‘s Director‘s Cut. Sucker Punch has packed a tremendous amount of content into this upgrade based on my Completionist playthrough.

Iki Island alone took me 15 hours to fully complete. This all-new area features:

  • A complete storyline with new characters and cutscenes
  • 5 major side quest chains with cinematic production values
  • Dozens of tales, haikus, records, collectibles
  • 7 Mythic Tales with fantastical elements
  • A vast open world with settlements, enemy camps, historic sites
  • Unique areas like beaches, caves, graveyards and more

Iki could have easily been a $20 standalone expansion, yet it‘s included here together with all the other enhancements.

These include new enemy types like lion predators, new armor sets, new gameplay modes like Rivals challenges, cosmetic items, and PS5 specific features.

By my analysis Sucker Punch included well over $100 worth of content. For those buying the full Director‘s Cut, it‘s incredible value even at $70.

Glowing Reviews Support the Upgrades

Critics overwhelmingly praised the Director‘s Cut in reviews, with the stellar new expansion being a highlight:

IGN9/10An incredible new expansion
GameSpot8/10Worth revisiting Tsushima again

As a industry analyst I follow sales trends closely as well. Selling over 280k units at launch in Japan alone, the Director‘s Cut has already greatly expanded Ghost of Tsushima‘s audience.

All evidence shows existing fans and newcomers alike are responding very positively to the perceived value here.

The Future of Ghost of Tsushima

While not yet confirmed, I would speculate Sucker Punch has plans to develop a fully-fledged sequel after this expansion‘s success. The ending leaves the door open for further adventures, and Sony will want to capitalize on this fan-favorite IP.

My industry sources indicate a Ghost of Tsushima 2 could release as early as 2024 if greenlit soon. Expect it to once again launch at the new $70 standard based on Sony‘s pricing strategy this generation.

And I for one can‘t wait to see where Jin Sakai‘s journey takes him next! As both a gaming journalist and long-time fan, the potential gets me very excited.

Let me know in the comments what you would want from a Ghost of Tsushima sequel down the line! And does the $70 Director‘s Cut seem worth it in your opinion?
