Why is my PS4 Controller Purple?
Friend, a purple light bar on your PS4 controller indicates it is set as the fourth controller connected to your PlayStation 4. This is a standard feature – nothing to worry about!
What Each Color Means
The color corresponds to when each controller establishes a connection:
- Blue: 1st Controller
- Red: 2nd Controller
- Green: 3rd Controller
- Purple: 4th Controller
So if you see purple, your controller connected fourth in order.
Changing the Color
While purple indicates Player 4 by default, you can easily change the color in your PS4 settings if desired. To do so:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Controllers
- Select the controller
- Choose a new color under Light Bar Color
Many games take advantage of the different light bar colors for multiplayer purposes. But the option is there if you prefer a different shade!
When Light Flashes
A flashing light bar can mean the controller is low on battery. I recommend charging it fully via USB cable before your next gaming session.
If flashing persists after a full charge, it could indicate a connection issue. Make sure no obstacles block the path between your controller and PS4. Interference from other devices can also cause connectivity problems.
As a last resort, press the small reset button on the back of the controller to resync it. This usually resolves any pairing issues.
Controller Lifespan
An original DualShock 4 controller lasts around 5-10 years with normal use. To maximize lifespan:
- Handle carefully to prevent button / joystick damage
- Store in a clean, dry area when not in use
- Fully charge battery before long-term storage
- Update controller software when available
With proper care, your DualShock 4 should provide many years of gaming enjoyment! Let me know if you have any other questions.
