Why is Ultimate Custom Night Not Canon in Five Nights at Freddy‘s?

Ultimate Custom Night (UCN) has captured the imagination of Five Nights at Freddy‘s fans with its collection of animatronic characters from across the series‘ history. However, developer Scott Cawthon has confirmed that UCN exists outside of the core FNaF story canon. There are a few key reasons for this.

Non-Canon Characters

UCN contains several characters that are explicitly not part of the canon FNaF storyline, such as:

  • Jack-O-Chica from the Halloween Edition of FNaF 4
  • Nightmarionne from the Halloween Update
  • Nightmare Balloon Boy from the Halloween Edition

Scott Cawthon has directly stated that the FNaF 4 Halloween content is not canon, so the inclusion of those characters in UCN reinforces its non-canon status.

Story and Gameplay Focus

Rather than advancing the core FNaF story, UCN is focused on delivering fan service and new gameplay challenges. As an Ultimate Custom Night mode, the priority is allowing players to customize and control their experience versus revealing new story details.

While some fans have theorized UCN represents William Afton‘s purgatory, Scott Cawthon has not provided any definite connections between UCN and the canon. So most analysis considers UCN an entertaining aside from the core timeline.

Public Statements from Scott Cawthon

In several Reddit AMAs and Steam community comments, Scott Cawthon has personally confirmed that UCN exists outside of official FNaF canon:

"UCN is not canon and is meant to be just for fun."

"Ultimate Custom Night is not canon or story related."

So while fans still enjoy piecing together lore implications from details in UCN, Scott Cawthon has definitively established that UCN itself does not fit as part of the Five Nights at Freddy‘s story canon. This gives him freedom to bring in non-canon characters and create fun challenge modes for players to enjoy as a standalone title.

Those are the main reasons why Ultimate Custom Night resides outside of official FNaF canon despite its popularity among fans. Let me know if you have any other questions!
