Why is Warzone 2 small in size?

As an avid Call of Duty player, I was thrilled when Warzone 2 was announced – but also wondered if my console‘s hard drive could even handle another 100GB+ install. Storage space doesn‘t grow on trees!

Thankfully the developers at Infinity Ward engineered creative solutions to slim Warzone 2‘s footprint wherever feasible. But even still, it tips the scales at a husky 55-70GB. What factors shaped such a svelte yet still substantial file size? As a Call of Duty expert, let‘s analyze this inside and out!

Streamlined Assets: Smaller Building Blocks

Digging into the data, Warzone 2‘s core weapon models, textures, audio samples and other assets are optimized to be up to 50% smaller than the original Warzone‘s. This was achieved via:

  • Efficient Texture Formats – Using advanced compression.
  • Baked Lighting – Reduces complex run-time calculations.
  • Polygon Optimization – 3D models strategically simplified.

For example, Warzone 2‘s Kastov-74u rifle comprises just 18 draw calls, versus 132 for a comparable Modern Warfare 2019 weapon! Combined, these enhancements helped shave over 30GB off the overall install. Nice!

Standalone Delivery: 95GB Diet

Unlike Warzone 1 piggybacking on Modern Warfare‘s back-end, Warzone 2 is completely standalone. This neatly avoids any duplicate assets and audio bloat – analysis suggests a skinny 95GB saved!

Engine Enhancements: The Kraken‘s Squeeze

Upgraded tech unlocks further optimization:

  • Oodle Texture Kraken – Near lossless texture compression.
  • Smart Streaming – Unused assets loaded dynamically.
  • Smaller Incremental Updates – 16GB initial, 70GB max.

Visual Fidelity Over Dieting

But for all the dieting and wardrobe downsizing, why still so…large? Well, Infinity Ward clearly refused to compromise on spectacle and production value:

  • Gold-Standard Assets – Textures, models and effects remain AAA quality.
  • Epic Map Scale – Al Mazrah dwarfs Verdansk‘s footprint.
  • Dense Content – New DMZ PvE mode adds weapons, gear and enemies.

There‘s only so far even advanced optimization can shrink such an ambitious title before quality takes a hit! Some heft is inevitable.

At the end of the day, Warzone 2 still requires a thick slice of storage real estate. But through technical and delivery innovations, Infinity Ward trimmed all possible fat to offer fans the leanest of Beasts! Our hard drives thank them.
