Yes, Battlefield 2042 does have limited cross-gen play

As a hardcore Battlefield gamer and content creator, one of the most common questions I‘ve been asked since Battlefield 2042‘s launch is whether it fully supports cross-generation play.

The Short Answer

Yes – Battlefield 2042 does have cross-generation play. But it is limited to last-generation consoles only.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players can play together, but they cannot play with friends on next-generation consoles or PC.

Here is a full break down:

So why is cross-generation play limited in Battlefield 2042? And what does this mean for you as a player? Let‘s break it down in detail.

Understanding the Limitations

The primary reason for the cross-generation play limitations in Battlefield 2042 is technological.

The last-generation Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles simply do not have the same horsepower as next-generation hardware and PC.

For example, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X both utilize high-speed SSDs to reduce loading times, the older hardware uses far slower mechanical hard drives. The newer consoles also have dedicated ray tracing acceleration for enhanced graphics.

Most importantly, however, is raw processing power and memory.

Xbox One/PS41080P @ 30 FPS Target

To deliver those stable high framerates at 4K resolution, the PS5 and Series X have orders of magnitude more computational throughput.

This raw horsepower enables the larger player count (128 players) and map sizes in Battlefield 2042 that last-generation consoles literally cannot handle from a technical perspective.

During testing, DICE found the Xbox One and PS4 struggled to maintain 30 FPS in the 128 player modes thanks to all the explosive action. And remember – next-gen consoles are targeting 60 FPS!

Maintaining a Quality Experience

Thus, players on Xbox One/PS4 are segregated into 64 player lobbies only with their last-generation counterparts to maintain a smooth experience.

Despite missing out on the huge new maps and higher player counts, gameplay is still fast and frenetic on last-gen hardware given the limitations.

And EA has committed to releasing new Battlefield 2042 content across both generations. So Xbox One and PS4 players will continue seeing new maps, modes, and updates even if they cannot play with next-generation players directly.

While next-generation consoles are still difficult to find in stock, availability continues improving into 2023. Battlefield‘s audience has largely moved on to modern hardware – on Steam alone over 75% of players are already on DirectX 12 compatible GPUs.

So while Battlefield 2042‘s cross-generation play has barriers now, the number of players affected long-term will dwindle as next-gen adoption increases.

Should You Upgrade to Next-Gen?

For the optimal Battlefield 2042 experience with all maps and modes, I recommend upgrading to PS5, Xbox Series X|S or an equivalent gaming PC when possible.

Not only will you gain access to bigger lobbies and maps, but other major improvements as well:

  • 4K resolution and 60 FPS frame rate
  • Faster loading with SSD storage
  • Enhanced graphics with ray tracing
  • DualSense adaptive trigger support on PS5
  • Fully cross-play multiplayer across next-gen systems and PC

Based on leaks, it also appears likely the rumored battle royale mode coming later in 2023 will be next-generation only.

That said, the game does still play great on PS4 and Xbox One! Destruction feels impactful, the maps look surprisingly detailed, and gameplay is framed well at the reduced 1080P resolution.

So while next-generation systems or an equivalent gaming PC yields the best experience, Battlefield 2042 holds up on last generation hardware for those who cannot upgrade immediately.

You‘ll be limited to a max of 64 players per match and smaller map sizes, but core gameplay still shines on seven year old technology. That is a testament to DICE‘s technical prowess keeping the action fluid even on dated hardware.

What Does the Future Hold?

EA has not announced plans to remove cross-generation barriers entirely in Battlefield 2042.

The player count and map size limitations are deeply rooted in the technical capabilities of each platform. And loosening restrictions could negatively impact stability and performance.

But other franchises like Call of Duty: Warzone allow cross-generation multiplayer despite hardware differences. So it‘s feasible DICE could introduce a reduced player count next-generation mode playable with Xbox One/PS4 down the road.

As next-generation adoption rises further, latency from last-generation mechanical hard drives could be the final sticking point. With so much live destruction and player movement, new data needs to load rapidly from storage into memory to prevent stuttering.

So while full integration may come eventually, don‘t expect limitations to loosen significantly over Battlefield 2042‘s initial retail life cycle. Expect factions to remain segmented by platform power for the next couple years at minimum.

I‘ll be sure to provide updates here if any cross-generation changes are announced!

Until next-generation consoles and GPUs are more readily available, playing with friends across console generations in Battlefield 2042 simply isn‘t possible.

But the core experience holds strong even on 7 year old hardware for those unable to upgrade. And Battlefield 2042 continues getting new content across platforms regardless.

For the full 128 player warfare DICE envisioned at 60 FPS and 4K resolution though, only next-gen hardware or an equally muscular PC will do.

When building a new rig for Battlefield 2042, an Intel i7 CPU, Nvidia RTX 3070 or better GPU, and PCIe 4.0 SSD are recommended. This brings the true power needed for silky performance even in the most explosive moments on PC.
