Will FIFA 23 Ever Work on Steam Deck?

As an avid FIFA gamer and Steam Deck owner myself, I‘ve done extensive research into FIFA 23‘s compatibility with Valve‘s handheld PC. Based on technical constraints with the game‘s anti-cheat software, lack of Linux support, and no announcements from EA on Steam Deck optimization, I can definitively say FIFA 23 will unfortunately never be officially supported or playable on Steam Deck.

Examining the Technical Limitations

FIFA 23 utilizes the following technologies that prevent it from functioning on Steam Deck:

  • Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) – This anti-cheat software requires Windows 10/11, TPM 2.0 module, and Secure Boot to run properly. SteamOS is built on Linux and does not meet these specifications.
  • DirectX 12 – FIFA leverages DirectX 12 APIs designed only for Windows platforms.
  • Lack of Linux Support – SteamOS is based on Arch Linux. Without dedicated Linux binaries and optimizations from EA, performance suffers even using Proton translation layers.

Based on these core technical constraints, there is virtually no chance of getting FIFA 23 to run on Steam Deck without direct intervention from EA with a Linux port.

According to gaming analyst site GamesBrief, "Unless EA decides to develop and support a native Linux version of the game, FIFA 23 will never be officially playable on the Steam Deck. The anti-cheat and OS-level requirements prevent it."

Dual Booting and Proton Don‘t Solve the Issues

Some users have come up with workarounds by dual booting Windows or using Valve‘s built-in Proton compatibility layer to run the game. However, based on community testing documented on sites like ProtonDB, these solutions still fail to solve underlying compatibility issues related to Easy Anti-Cheat and missing Linux support.

Windows dual boot configurations only get the game to launch, while Proton attempts still face crashing, instability, and banned accounts due to the anti-cheat detecting compatibility tools. EA would need to update Easy Anti-Cheat itself to enable Proton compatibility, which again seems highly unlikely.

EA and Valve Need to Prioritize Compatibility

As Steam Deck continues its massive growth, now passing 1.6 million units sold as of November 2022, pressure does mount on publishers like Electronic Arts to consider Linux and Proton support more seriously. However, based on EA‘s history of prioritizing its own EA App and platforms like Origin, they have shown reluctance to dedicate resources to Valve‘s competing Steam ecosystem.

Similarly, Valve faces responsibility to convince third-party publishers about ensuring more games work flawlessly on Steam Deck. But as ArsTechnica reports, "Valve says it‘s ultimately up to game developers themselves to put in that compatibility work."

So without joint incentives between EA/Origin and Valve/Steam to collaborate, FIFA 23 integration faces too many barriers. Gamers seem to be out of luck for now.

Probability of Future FIFA 23 Steam Deck Support

Given the above analysis, I estimate a less than 5% chance that FIFA 23 ever gets patched or optimized for flawless Steam Deck integration. However, there is a possibility that future FIFA iterations like FIFA 24 could run more smoothly if:

  • Easy Anti-Cheat adds Linux/Proton support
  • EA ports games to SteamOS/Linux for wider distribution
  • Valve provides more compatibility tools and incentives
  • FIFA player complaints on Linux devices grow more vocal

But as this 2022 GamingOnLinux article shows, EA stated plainly they have zero plans to support anti-cheat solutions on Steam Deck. So any future compatibility looks extremely unlikely at this stage.
