Is an all-new Attack on Titan video game coming? Yes – here‘s why:

As an ardent gamer and Attack on Titan fan, I get asked this question a lot recently – will there be a new game based on the hugely popular anime? Based on multiple factors like the anime finale, developer interest, and potential sales, I strongly believe the answer is yes. In this post I‘ll analyze why a new AOT game announcement seems imminent.

Popularity and Reception of Past AOT Games

Previous Attack on Titan video games have seen strong reception and sales, showing the consistent appeal of the property as a game adaptation. For example:

  • Attack on Titan (2013) – 530k units sold
  • Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom (2016) – 1M+ units
  • Attack on Titan 2 (2018) – Over 2M units worldwide

As shown in the table below, even niche AOT games have performed very well:

GamePlatformUnits Sold
Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains3DS300k
Attack on Titan: Escape from Certain DeathBrowser Game1M+ players

With each game outperforming the last, the franchise clearly has an enthusiastic fanbase willing to play new AOT video game adaptations. This reduces the risk for developers and publishers looking to invest in more games.

The Finale is Coming – Capitalize on the Hype!

With the immensely popular anime entering its final season in 2024, interest in Attack on Titan couldn‘t be higher. As a mega-fan myself, I know firsthand how anticipation for the ending has the fandom at a fever pitch.

A new console/PC game releasing in conjunction with the finale seems like perfect timing. Riding the wave of hype and speculation coming off the anime ending in late 2023, a video game announcement could generate tons of buzz and sales.

Consoles Are Paying Attention

While no official game has been unveiled yet, there are promising signs of developer interest in the AOT gaming space:

  • In 2021, well-known Japanese studio Ruby Party registered a domain for "Shingeki no Kyojin Team Battle" – suggesting plans for a competitive AOT game
  • Omega Force survey asked fans what Spin-off Warriors concept they‘d like to see – Attack on Titan was by far the most requested pick

These may just be early indications, but major studios clearly recognize AOT‘s gaming appeal. To me, it‘s a matter of when not if another developer secures the rights for a new game.

My Prediction…

Given all of these factors – the hype, strong platform holder interest, and sales potential – I‘d guess we see the first teaser/announcements for an all new AOT console game in late 2023 or early 2024.

As a gaming analyst and Attack on Titan super-fan, this is one announcement I‘ll be watching very closely! An open world RPG or co-op brawler game would be a dream come true.

What kind of game would you want to see next in the AOT universe? Let me know in the comments!
