Do Shields of Faith Stack in Elden Ring? A Paladin‘s Perspective

As a long-time player and expert on paladin builds in RPGs like Elden Ring, one of the most common questions I see is: do Shield of Faith bonuses stack?

The answer is yes, you can absolutely stack Shield of Faith for higher AC. But how does this work exactly? And what are the best shield pairings to complement this iconic buff?

Let‘s delve into the mechanics so you can make the most of this versatile spell!

Demystifying Shield Bonus Stacking Rules

Elden Ring handles bonus stacking using a framework similar to D&D 3.5e. Bonuses generally stack together, unless they explicitly state otherwise or hail from the same "bonus type" – for example, two instances of "deflection" won‘t compound.

According to veteran community testers at fextralife, Shield of Faith confers a +2 deflection bonus to AC ([1]). This means it stacks with shield bonuses like those provided inherently by…well, shields!

  • Your Trusty Brass Shield: +3 shield bonus
  • Shield of Faith: +2 deflection bonus
  • Total Bonus: +5 AC

So by leveraging Shield of Faith to its maximum potential, you can become an impenetrable bastion against even the hardest bosses‘ blows!

Math Breakdown: How High Can You Realistically Get AC?

Let‘s theorycraft some of the tankiest Shield of Faith builds possible as of patch 1.08:

  • 99 Vit Knight Build
    • Bull Goat Armor Set = 56 Poise, 52 Guard Boost (+25 shield bonus)
    • Golden Greatshield = 65 Guard Boost (+29 shield bonus)
    • Shield of Faith = +2 Deflection Bonus
    • Talismans
      • Dragoncrest Greatshield = +15 Physical Negation
      • Pearldrake +2 = +12% Elemental Negation
      • Bull Goat = +5 Poise

This setup puts you at 98 Poise, 117 Guard Boost and +56 bonus AC! You‘ll be able to face-tank Malenia, Maliketh and Elden Beast back to back without breaking a sweat.

Of course, for less beefy builds, you can still gain a sizable AC improvement from Shield of Faith. On my Battlemage, I couple it with the Academy Glintshield for nice balance of offense and defense.

Here are some more creative community shield pairings with Shield of Faith I‘ve seen:

BuildShield 1Shield 2Description
Lady of FaithCrest ShieldGolden EpitaphHigh magic protection to counter enemy sorceries
CrusaderBrass ShieldInseparable SwordBalanced physical and lightning negation
Pyromancer‘s BulwarkFlame-Spurting ShieldRed Thorn RoundshieldWard allies with reduces fire damage aura

While the Crusader setup gives you solid lightning defense against late game bosses, the Pyromancer combo lets you shield bash with volcano pots close-up! Lots of fun synergies to play with.

Erdtree Greatshield – The Holy Grail for Paladins

If you‘re rocking a Strength/Faith character and want to go all out though, let‘s talk Erdtree Greatshield.

Erdtree Greatshield

With 66 Guard Boost and extremely efficient 13.5 weight, this mighty greatshield offers the best protection-to-mobility ratio when fully-upgraded ([2]).

It also grants bonuses like +8 Faith and strong Holy damage negation – perfect for Confessor and Golden Vow builds.

Slap on Shield of Faith with some Pearldrake or Dragoncrest Talismans, and you have an end-game viable tank that laughs off Maliketh‘s Black Blades while smashing with Coded Sword or Blasphemous Blade.

Critics argue sticking with Barricade Shield Ash of War can often eclipse Erdtree‘s guard stamina efficiency. However, testing by seasoned vets like Iron Pineapple reveals staggering disparities in damage taken between Barricade and Erdtree + Shield combo.

We‘re talking 4000 HP lost vs 200 HP lost against late-game Duo boss ordinated camera slams ([3]). Now that‘s a staggering difference!

In any case, Erdtree will serve you well if you ever feel like main-tanking co-op sessions too. Tonally match with the Tree Sentinel armor for full cosplay authenticity!

Conclusion

While Shield of Faith is available relatively early to hybrid classes like Confessors and Prophets, recognize its power scales immensely into the late game.

Smart stacking with complementary shields enables almost meme-worthy levels of defense. This frees you up to focus on dealing damage, healing teammates or pulling dangerous foes.

At the same time, be wary of fat-rolling if overburdened, or losing retaliation opportunities from overly turtling. Remember the core tenets of the Paladin – courage, duty and justice. Keep your Faith ever lit, and the path shall be clear.

Now go forth noble holy warriors, and let no attack prevail against you! The Age of the Erdtree awaits…
