What Happens if Your Horse Dies in Skyrim?

As a passionate Skyrim player and content creator, I feel your pain if your trusty steed has perished. Unfortunately, horses do not respawn when they die in Skyrim. You‘ll have to return to a stable and pay 1,000 gold pieces for a brand new mount.

Based on my extensive gameplay experience across multiple versions, here is an in-depth look at what happens when your cherished companion dies:

Horses Don‘t Respawn – You Must Buy Another

Unlike humanoid followers and creatures, horses do not regenerate when they die in Skyrim. Their death is permanent for that playthrough.

The stablekeepers at Whiterun, Riften, or other major holds restock their "merchandise" after a few in-game days. However, you must shell out another 1,000 gold to replace your fallen steed. That‘s no small sum in early game.

Tips to Avoid Your Horse Dying

While risky, you can steal a horse and avoid the hefty fee. But purchasing a mount affords more protection. Here are tips to avoid paying repeated fees:

Manage Combat Engagements

Horses are vulnerable without proper upgrades. Even a lowly wolf can maul your steed if you‘re not careful. Avoid combat when mounted or invest in horse armor via the Dawnguard DLC.

Monitor Health + Heal

Keep health levels visible when riding and be quick on the Healing Hands spell after combat. Horses can die easily from fall damage too – ease them down cliffs.

Use Calm Spells

Horses will flee combat when injured. Cast Calm or purchased spells to keep them close so you can heal them during a fight.

By managing these scenarios, you can spare yourself the 1,000 gold loss from a horse death!

What To Do If Your Skyrim Horse Disappears or Dies

If Shadowmere or your custom horse inexplicably disappears, try this:

  1. Fast travel to any location – this typically resets the horse‘s position near you
  2. Check major city stables – the game may transfer a missing/dead horse back to its originating stable
  3. Use console commands – player.placeatme [ID] will spawn a new horse, resurrect revives dead ones

I recommend frequent quick saving before using console commands to fix glitches just in case.

Should You Buy Skyrim Horses Early Game?

While extremely useful for crossing long distances, purchasing a horse costs 1,000 gold. That‘s likely all your savings in early game!

As a low-level adventurer, you may prefer upgrading weapons, armor, spells, or skill levels first. Become the Archmage at Winterhold before blowing coin on a horse.

If you simply must ride early on, try:

  • Stealing – from stables in the night – reload if caught!
  • Console commands for free horse

I don‘t recommend buying horses until mid-game when you‘ve amassed wealth from dungeon looting or merchant trading. But you do you, warrior!

Keeping Your Skyrim Horse Alive

My last piece of advice for avoiding horse tragedy is optimizing their survival rate when fighting alongside you:

As I cautioned earlier, horses and combat don‘t mix well. But with upgraded armor and handling precautions, you can minimize risk…

Avoiding Environmental Deaths

What To Do If Your Skyrim Horse Glitches

Like all things Bethesda, Skyrim has its fair share of hiccups. But take hope, brave gamer! Here are workarounds for common horse glitches…

While the loss of your loyal Skyrim steed is a tragedy, it need not be permanent. Several options exist to revive or replace them. With extra care in combat and traveling, you may just avoid buying horse #15.
