Can the PS3 Slim Run PS2 Discs? A Retro Gamer‘s Definitive Guide

As a lifelong gamer and modder always looking to revive classics on modern hardware, one of the most common questions I see is:

"Can I play my PS2 game discs on a PS3 Slim?"

So let‘s settle that key question once and for all…

No, unfortunately PlayStation 3 Slim models can NOT natively run PlayStation 2 game discs.

Only the original launch PlayStation 3 "fat" models with 4 USB ports included the Emotion Engine processor required to play PS2 discs. This PS2 hardware was removed in the PS3 Slim, so discs can no longer be read.

However, while discs are off the table, that doesn‘t mean you can‘t still enjoy PS2 gaming on a PS3 Slim! Let‘s explore some alternative options…

Downloading PS2 Classics on PlayStation Store

The easiest official way to play PS2 games on a PS3 Slim is to purchase digital versions upgraded for the PS3 via PSN.

Over 275+ PS2 games have been ported as "PS2 Classics", running via software emulation rather than requiring original PS2 hardware.

Popular titles available as of February 2023 include:

Prices range from $6 – $15 per game. For convenience and cost, this digital library is a great legal means to enjoy PS2 gaming on the PS3 Slim!

Downsides are the limited games available compared to the full PS2 library, and early reports of shaky emulation on some titles. But for popular games, performance is generally solid.

Buying PS2 Classics HD Remasters

Alongside individual downloads, there are also over 60+ PS2 game remasters available on PS3. These provide HD visual upgrades, PlayStation trophies support, and other benefits.

Some of my favorite PS2 series given the remaster treatment include:

This next option is a bit more complex, but for tech savvy gamers the ultimate way to unlock the full PS2 library:

Modding your PS3 Slim with Custom Firmware (CFW) to add homebrew PS2 emulators.

This allows playing PS2 game ISO disc images, essentially fooling the system into thinking a PS2 disc is inserted.

Based on my testing across various emulators, in terms of playability and game compatibility I recommend PS2 Classics GUI Emulation (PS2 Net Emulation). Over 85% of games I‘ve tested run flawlessly!

Some key benefits if modding for emulation:

• Play your full PS2 discs/ISO library
• Enhanced graphics/textures via GSdx software rendering

Do note that modding requires opening up and tinkering within your PS3 Slim system to install CFW. I‘d recommend the Rebug 4.89.1 Lite firmware specifically.
