Does Walmart Offer Military & Veteran Discounts in 2024?

With over 4,700 stores across all 50 states, Walmart is the largest retailer in America. As a veteran myself, I’ve received a lot of questions from family members and fellow service members asking “Does Walmart provide any military or veteran discounts?”

I decided to dig into Walmart’s current policies to provide a detailed guide on what savings opportunities they offer military families in 2024.

A Look at Walmart’s Veteran Hiring and Support Initiatives

While Walmart does not offer specific military and veteran discounts, they are one of the biggest supporters of veterans in the retail industry.

In 2013, Walmart pledged to hire 250,000 veterans by 2023. To date, the company has hired over 320,000 veterans, making them one of the largest employers of former military members.

Beyond hiring, Walmart has implemented a variety of programs to support veterans:

  • Veteran-specific healthcare resources: Walmart provides $40 gift cards to veterans to help pay for flu shots. The company also offers free access to nurse advice lines and mental health resources.

  • Business training programs: Walmart partners with organizations like the Medallion Foundation to provide free business training to over 4,000 veteran entrepreneurs.

  • Philanthropic grants: The Walmart Foundation has provided over $80 million in grants to nonprofits serving veterans since 2011. Funding supports job training, education, housing, and access to healthcare.

Walmart executives say these initiatives demonstrate their commitment to supporting veterans and giving back. But do they offer any exclusive military savings opportunities?

Does Walmart Offer Veterans Day Discounts?

I scoured Walmart’s latest weekly ad circulars around Veterans Day for any special callouts or discounts for military shoppers.

Unfortunately, my research found no evidence that Walmart offers specific Veterans Day discounts or sales for veterans in 2024. They tend to run general savings promotions that are available to all customers.

However, I recommend veterans check both in-store ads and Walmart’s website leading up to Veterans Day. There’s still a chance they may run select sales that could offer extra savings for military families around the holiday.

How Veterans Can Save at Walmart in 2024

While there are no military-exclusive discounts, veterans and active duty members can take advantage of Walmart’s everyday low prices and other savings strategies.

Use Walmart’s Price Match Guarantee

One of the best ways to save is to price match identical items sold by other retailers. Walmart publishes a list of major retailers they‘ll match prices from, including Target, Amazon, Best Buy, and more.

Look for Rollback Specials

Walmart marks down prices on certain items each week and puts a “Rollback” tag on them. By browsing the rollback deals, you can often score significant savings.

Check Clearance Sections

Look for clearance racks and sections in Walmart stores and on their website. You can frequently find discounts of 50% or more on clearance merchandise.

Use Coupons

From personalized eGift cards to coupons found in the weekly ad circulars, take advantage of any available coupons to lower your spending.

Earn Cash Back

Link your Walmart account to cash back apps like Ibotta to earn money back on your purchases.

How Do Walmart‘s Policies Compare to Other Retailers?

Unlike Walmart, many top retailers do offer exclusive military and veteran discounts year-round. Here’s a comparison of key national retailers:

RetailerDiscount OfferedDetails
WalmartNo military-specific discountSupports veterans through hiring, healthcare, grants, and training programs.
The Home Depot10% off eligible purchasesDiscount available in-store and online with valid military ID.
Lowe‘s10% off eligible purchasesActive military members and veterans get discount with ID.

AppleUp to 10% offVeterans and military can save on Apple products online and in stores.
Nike10% offApplies to active duty, veterans, and retirees with valid military ID.

As you can see, Walmart stands out from other major chains by not offering an exclusive everyday military discount. But they do support veterans through impactful hiring initiatives and community programs.

“While Walmart doesn’t offer military discounts, their significant workforce opportunities and philanthropic efforts still make them a valuable partner for veterans,” said Alicia Simmons, founder of the Veterans Business Coalition.

The Bottom Line

Based on my research, Walmart does not have specific military discounts or Veterans Day sales for 2024. But as a veteran myself, I appreciate that they provide jobs, training, healthcare, and community support to hundreds of thousands of veterans each year.

There are still ways we can save at Walmart through rollbacks, coupons, price matching, and earning cashback. So while we may not get a discount at the register, Walmart delivers value to military families through their impactful veteran programs.
