Just How Rare is Fortnite‘s Blue Team Leader Skin in 2024?

In one word: extremely – but only if you‘re not a PlayStation player. For PlayStation gamers, the Blue Team Leader may not seem especially rare at all. But for virtually every other Fortnite player, it remains one of the most elusive and exclusive outfits in the game.

Blue Team Leader

First released in June 2018 as part of the PlayStation Celebration Pack, the Blue Team Leader skin was only obtainable by PlayStation Plus subscribers – and only if they claimed it during that limited promotional period. It has never been available in the item shop or any kind of rotation since.

That exceptional one-time exclusivity is what puts Blue Team Leader in truly rare company alongside the likes of Renegade Raider, Aerial Assault Trooper and Black Knight in terms of sought-after Fortnite skins.

Why is the Blue Team Leader Skin So Rare?

Quite simply, because it was only able to be obtained one time – by PlayStation Plus subscribers back in 2018. Unlike skins that have rotated through the item shop, battle passes or special events multiple times, there was only a tiny window where PlayStation gamers could add it to their lockers.

Estimates indicate there were around 34.2 million PlayStation Plus subscribers worldwide in 2018 when this skin first launched. However, we have to assume only a small percentage of those subscribers even played Fortnite. And an even smaller portion would have remembered to obtain this bonus skin during its short availability timeframe.

So when we compare the total number of Fortnite players across all platforms today (over 350 million as of late 2022), we can deduce that owners of the Blue Team Leader comprise only single-digit percentages of the current player base.

For non-PlayStation gamers, of course, the percentage drops to virtually zero. Unless they accessed the promotion back then by linking accounts, they have had zero opportunities since to unlock Blue Team Leader through any normal methods.

That extreme exclusivity and miniscule ownership group is why most Fortnite fans consider Blue Team Leader to be such coveted rarity.

How Does Its Rarity Compare to Other Rare Skins?

The Fortnite community loves to debate which are the absolute rarest outfits in the game. Alongside Blue Team Leader, skins like Renegade Raider, Aerial Assault Trooper and Black Knight always come up. So how does this exclusive PS Plus skin compare to those legends in terms of rarity?

Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper stand apart as the OG rarest skins by virtue of being the very first unlockable outfits back in Chapter 1 Season 1. The only way to obtain them was reaching certain Season Level milestones. With Fortnite‘s player base and popularity so much smaller back then, highly limited numbers of early adopters were able to hit those high levels in time.

So those skins are about as rare as it gets in Fortnite. But Blue Team Leader shares that distinction of being available just one time under special circumstances to a portion of the player base.

Black Knight was the final tier Battle Pass reward in Season 2, so more players had the opportunity over time to work their way up and unlock it through enough grinding. That places Black Knight a notch below in terms of sheer rarity compared to Blue Team Leader in my opinion.

So while Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper represent the pinnacle based on their short early availability windows, I would rank Blue Team Leader closer to them than any other skin due to just how limited its exclusive PlayStation Plus offer window was.

What Does Blue Team Leader Actually Look Like in Game?

For those who haven‘t encountered it in a match, Blue Team Leader is one of the basic "soldier" male skins with solid blue pants and shirt plus bright yellow accessories.

Nothing too fancy, but its vibrant blue hues make it stand out visually when you do come across someone rocking this rare outfit.

Some players opt to pair it with back bling like Wolfpack or the Precision pack. Since it‘s not particularly bulky or detailed,Blue Team Leader fits nicely with most harvesting tools as well.

Overall it‘s a slick military-esque skin that turns heads purely due to how rarely anyone has it equipped on the island.

Any Chance Blue Team Leader Returns in the Future?

Epic has been known to reintroduce some highly coveted skins for special events or offers – paradigm being the most recent example. Could Blue Team Leader ever make such an encore and get released publicly at some point?

I doubt we ever see this exact skin run through the item shop rotations. It was branded specifically to the PlayStation Plus partnership. But there‘s always the chance Epic recolors it or tweaks the design just enough to sell variants to a wider audience.

We‘ve seen slight model variations with returning skins so that OG owners retain exclusive bragging rights. So while I don‘t anticipate this exact Blue Team Leader coming back permanently, some sort of spiritual successor isn‘t completely out of the question down the road.

But for now it remains a true rarity that flashes in matches totally randomly and immediately turns heads based on seeing a skin that hardly anyone else has access to. For gamers who treasure exclusive gear, Blue Team Leader delivers that perk at an extreme level!

No matter how you obtain skins in Fortnite – battle pass unlocks, store purchases with v-bucks, promotions or bundles – no modern outfit offers the level of exclusivity attached to this iconic Chapter 1 PlayStation Plus reward.
