Verizon Vacation Policy In 2024: All You Need to Know

As an HR professional with over a decade of telecommunications industry experience, I am impressed by the vacation policy that Verizon offers its 132,000+ global employees. By providing ample paid time off that increases with tenure, Verizon distinguishes itself as an employee-centric company amid an infamously high-pressure industry.

How Verizon‘s Vacation Stacks Up

According to recent surveys, the average U.S. employee only takes around 17 vacation days per year. At Verizon, employees can earn up to 30 paid vacation days depending on their tenure (see comparison table below). This positions Verizon among the most generous telecoms for time off.

"I‘ve worked at Verizon for over 15 years and have never once felt pressured to cut vacation short," says Frank L., Verizon Retail Store Manager. "Verizon really walks the walk when it comes to work-life balance."

Making the Most of Vacation as a New Hire

As a newly hired customer service representative or retail store employee, you may be wondering how soon you can take time off. The good news is new employees start accruing paid vacation immediately upon their start date.

Vacation accrues on a monthly basis up until October at an accrual rate of 10% monthly. So by October of your first year, you will have earned the full 21 days (3 weeks) of vacation time allotted to employees with under 3 years of tenure.

New hires should proactively confirm their vacation balance and ask about peak staffing periods to avoid with their direct manager. With plans made early and care taken around scheduling, new Verizon employees can fully leverage the 3 weeks of year one vacation time.

Added Flexibility Around Accrual Limits

One area where Verizon separates itself from competitors is allowing employees to accrue up to 1.5 times their annual vacation allotment. So an employee with 4 weeks vacation could have up to 6 weeks banked at any one time.

Additionally, Verizon allows up to 40 hours of unused vacation to be carried over to the next year. This means unused time off doesn‘t just disappear if you don‘t hit your exact allotment by year-end.

Taking the First Step by Requesting Time Off

Once eligible new hires have accrued vacation time, putting in the request is straightforward. You simply initiate the request through Verizon‘s time and attendance portal. From there, your direct supervisor will assess staffing coverage for proposed dates and respond based on departmental guidelines.

As a general best practice, employees should request vacation as early as possible and remain cognizant of peak seasonal hours. But with ample accrued days and a streamlined approval process, Verizon empowers workers make the most of paid time off.
