Will There Be a Cuphead 3 Video Game?

I‘ve been getting this question a lot lately from fellow Cuphead fans eager to know if we can expect more adventures with the beloved brothers after 2022‘s excellent Delicious Last Course DLC…

The short answer is: unfortunately, Cuphead 3 does not currently seem likely at all.

Studio MDHR has explicitly stated that The Delicious Last Course represents the "final adventure" for the series before entering "retirement." Obviously plans can change, but as of now, the developers seem ready to let these wonderful characters ride off into the sunset.

However, with the brand staying relevant via the Netflix animated series, could fan passion eventually inspire them to pick up the controller for one more run ‘n gun romp? Let‘s analyze…

Should We Take Studio MDHR at Their Word?

First, it‘s important to note that MDHR has achieved incredible success with the Cuphead IP across gaming and streaming media. Here‘s a quick look:

Cuphead Lifetime Sales

Over 10 Million Units

Cuphead 1 & 2 Review Scores

86/100 (Cuphead)
90/100 (The Delicious Last Course)

The Cuphead Show Viewership

Ranked #1 Kids Show on Netflix in over 50 Countries

With smash hits across platforms, insatiable fan demand, and a clear franchise on their hands, MDHR could produce Cuphead 3 if they chose to.

However, the developers have achieved mainstream success and seem ready to work on personal passion projects, saying: "We got to do this crazy, wonderful thing, we rode it all the way and the franchise goes off into the sunset."

So unless something changes down the road, we should take them at their word regarding Cuphead‘s retirement from gaming for now.

On the other hand…

Could Pressure From Fans and Netflix Change Things?

Despite MDHR moving on, The Cuphead Show‘s reign on Netflix keeps the property culturally relevant. And audiences clearly crave more wacky adventures from the Inkwell Isles!

Looking at typical gaming industry timelines, sequels for hit franchises usually arrive every 3-5 years on average. It‘s nearing 6 years since Cuphead first poured fans a cup of challenging fun.

And the critical/commercial performance of The Delicious Last Course proves there‘s still strong demand for premium Cuphead gameplay:

The Delicious Last Course Reviews
  • Destructoid – 10/10
  • Game Informer – 9.3/10
  • IGN – 9/10
Sales (First Weeks)
  • #1 Best-Seller on Steam
  • Top Nintendo Switch Download

Cuphead clearly still has loyal, hungry fans that would snatch up a threequel in seconds. If Netflix keeps tapping into nostalgia with new seasons, could it tempt MDHR back for one last delicious course?

The Cuphead Crystal Ball: Hopes and Predictions

As a gaming analyst and Cuphead superfan, I don‘t expect Studio MDHR to reverse course and develop a full Cuphead 3 title. They seem genuinely ready to let the series rest for awhile.

However, I could envision them potentially revisiting the IP down the road with smaller projects:

  • A "complete edition" with both games bundled
  • Additional DLC levels/bosses
  • More merch/collectibles capitalizing on show fans

Or if Netflix viewership explodes even further into the mainstream, the brand recognition alone could motivate MDHR to finally cook up one last sequel years from now.

In summary – Cuphead 3 seems very unlikely right now, but never say never! This franchise clearly has special magic that could draw its developers back someday. For fans like myself holding out hope, all we can do is continuing supporting the series and trust in the talented team that brought us these wonderful games in the first place!
